Make sure you’re comparing apples to apples when calculating hotel costs. Many hotels have hidden “resort fees”. Parking fees are now also common.

Temperatures will rise steadily during these Spring months and will likely hit 100’s by mid-May. But it’s a dry heat and buildings are air conditioned. Evenings will be pleasant. Stay hydrated, use sunblock and wear a full brim hat for outdoor activities. If arriving by car make sure it’s been serviced for hot temperatures and always carry extra water for emergencies!

Like any sizable city there are bargains in Vegas. But not very many will be found on The Strip. Less expensive rooms, food and shopping can be found. The “locals” casinos (away from the Strip and Downtown) can be significant money savers while still enjoying the “Vegas atmosphere”.

Here’s a Vegas on a Budget link:

Remember the odds ALWAYS favor the house!!

Edit: Fixed dates for EDC May 16-23.

P.S. Looking for some fresh blood who might be interested in taking over this quarterly posting for the benefit of the forum. You would start with the Jul-Sep quarter. I could help for awhile. PM me if interested and I’ll share my notes.

suggestions on what show tickets are best bought on-line ahead of getting there

Not really - but tickets are usually available on the show day. They might be a little tougher to find on Fri / Sat night or if the show is a limited time engagement from a famous artist. The earlier in the day you buy the better chance, and better seat selection, you’ll have. Almost all shows have at least one "dark" night when they don't play.

Some credit cards or memberships (AARP / AAA) may have special “deals”.

Some shows offer decent discounts to current and former military ID card holders.

There are “half-price” ticket outlets located along the Strip. The price is usually closer to 2/3rds though after “handling fees” are figured in. Sometimes you only get a voucher which you must trade at the appropriate box office for the actual ticket. You need to do that trade as soon as possible in order to have the best seat selections.

The various casino club cards often will get you a discount for shows playing in their casinos. For Example you can usually get tickets for any show playing at any MGM property at any of their casinos. The club cards are free and issued on the spot when you sign up.

Might help if you indicated the type(s) of shows that interest you.

"sin city" ... lol. gay presence is kind of invisible. just back from Pirahna Bar ... advertised as premier gay bar in town ... mostly straight women with strippers that didn't go beyond a jock strap on stage. leaves me curious why the gay 'community' is so unorganized and invisible in this town. is it being overwhelmed by straight tourism?

I think it's more that the gay action to be had in Vegas is closeted married men, who are more in the market for stesmroom hookups than club experiences. But Tim and Matt of Adonis were unable to get a Vegas operation up off the ground and Tim pretty much said that the local government could be fairly characterized as gay-hostile. I mean, Krave was doing quite well when it was on the Strip but either the casino or the city really did not like having them there and pushed them off to the downtown area, and the owner lacked the cash flow to handle that transition and skipped town.

Is Palms Springs too much competition to bother to compete with or is it just plain old 'hostility'

Plain old hostility. While the mayor/city council may be nominally gay-friendly, I think the bureaucrats you have to go through to start anything up are a problem.

Here’s a little more info for Vegas visitors

There are some very nice “off-strip” places with a wide variety of prices and amenities. One significant advantage many will have is much cheaper dining, probably free parking and reduced (or no) “resort fees”. Most are on a major bus route / monorail allowing fairly easy (but maybe not 24hr) access to the Strip. Aside from the normal motel chains if you’re looking for a more “casino resort flavor” you might consider some of these. I’m sure I’ve missed some other good ones.

Near Strip West Side

Rio Casino

Gold Coast Casino

Palms Casino

The Orleans Casino

Palace Station Casino

Artisan Hotel (Small Boutique Hotel - no casino)

Near Strip East Side (Most on Paradise or Koval)

Spring Hill Suites

Renaissance Hotel

Hard Rock Casino

Hooters Casino

Far South:

Silverton Casino

South Point

The M resort

East Side

Green Valley Ranch Resort

Sunset Station Casino

Fiesta Henderson

Eastside Cannery Casino

Far West Side

Red Rock Casino

Rampart Casino

Suncoast Casino

Far North

Aliante Casino

The Cannery

Texas Station Casino

Fiesta Rancho Casino

Santa Fe Station Casino

Try to avoid the situation of having to regularly traverse the I-15 / US 93/95 spaghetti bowl intersection. Road construction there is ugly.

Edit Added following: Downtown possibilities, "probably" to free parking and added disclaimer.

And, of course, there’s the “old” Las Vegas Downtown Casinos and Hotels:

Golden Nugget Casino

California Hotel Casino

Main Street Station Casino

Plaza Casino

Four Queens Casino

Binions Gambling Hall

Most are on or near the Fremont Street Experience.
