Happily in the UK it is legal, and therefore I do.

I find rates in the US are 2-2.5x higher than the UK. I wonder if that has anything to do with the illegality.

I assume so. That's a barrier to entry for potential providers, which would drive up the cost for those who do chose to do it.

If prostitution was decriminalised I would run an agency and help people get into the industry in exchange for a percentage of their earnings. I would also teach them how to market themselves so as soon as they decide that they’re sick of sharing their earnings, they are equipped to go independent and keep all of them. An ethical agency can serve a good role in helping newbies enter the industry smoothly and safely. And to support experienced escorts who simply don’t care to handle the marketing aspect of their work (part-time escorts with demanding full-time employment outside the industry, for example).

With the current legal climate in the US, however, I would never take the risk. The level of legal risk for agencies is infinitely higher than the level of legal risk for an independent provider.

I totally wish you could do that, I'd be one of your boys! A long long time ago I worked as a stripper (in a different life) and always enjoyed the atmosphere of working with others. That is the one thing about escorting, it can be lonely - I imagine thats why many of us spend so much time on here. I wish I could work at a brothel or with an agency.

Sadly, even in some places where independent escorting is decriminalised, like in the UK, escorts working together in groups remains criminalised. It’s even risky there for groups of escorts who are friends to share a working apartment as an Incall. I hope if we ever get decriminalisation over here we avoid making the same mistake. Being able to work together in groups offers a lot of safety and social support.

My URL (FTM4RENT.com) is actually something I registered years ago, long before I was out of the closet in the industry as FTM myself. It was originally intended to be a directory for FTM escorts, much like RentMen but specific to transmasculine guys. Nowadays I’m too concerned about the legal consequences to pursue that project. Might repurpose it for that same reason later if the legal climate changes a little. Waiting to see what happens with Backpage...

I was unaware of that rule, @FTM Zachary Prince. A naive question: how does a house of boys like London’s Villa Gianni operate then? I am curious.

You’re probably right, but there are also potential clients who never become customers because of legal concerns, so the market could potentially expand on the other side of the equation as well.

Agreed, but I suspect the supply side would expand quicker than the demand. The only evidence to back that up, however, is a casual belief that rates are lower is legal countries.

Its such a shame because that advertising platform would really be so helpful. There are so many new guys coming up but getting lost amongst the fray in rentmen. My client last night, who has been a hirer for a long time, didn't even know you could do a keyword search.

I've heard such great things about the brothel system in Australia - can you imagine a house of trans people working together? Sounds like a dream!

Not to mention RentMen wont allow trans men to show our hard-ons (strap-ons) in public. Considering it’s STANDARD for CIS men to be allowed to show theirs I find it pretty crippling and wish we had another ad venue to work with. I’m pretty much going to stop advertising on RentMen after my six month ad subscription expires because I find it useless without being allowed to show the tool that I actually top guys with. Trans men do need an ad venue that doesn’t discriminate against us. I hear A4A is banning trans men on the grounds that we are not men too.

That's the thing. Sometimes i feel legalizing (or decriminalize, etc, etc) will be a careful for what you wish for type of thing.

Look what happened to Colorado. They legalized marijuana, the prices went way down and the cost of living went way up.

And as with everything else American government puts their hands on, you'd need to be licensed, insured, bonded, denied if you're hiv poz, can't work near a school (my old place in Denver had a upstairs balcony facing across the road from a little private Christian school. I'd have to play music or porn to drown out the sounds of children playing).

Just decriminalize and keep off. That said, i don't think it'll ever become legal until a female president backs up the decision. Not saying Hillary would or wouldn't have done it, but hypothetically if she did, it'll be backed with feminism to make it more acceptable.
