I will try this on the Asia section also, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend web sites for China. I will be travelling to China in a few weeks and will spend time in the major cities of Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai. Also, do these cities have any bars with a for hire atmoshpere?

I was on a tour of China in April. I went on gaydar.co.uk and looked on their "who's online" China section under thumbnails. There are lots of people online...regular people, not escorts...who are eager to meet visitors. Check out a profile/pics and message them. I met very nice people in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong this way. I met some real Chinese (not part of the highly organized tourist industry) who could show me real chinese restaurants and some pleasurable intimate activity.

 

Beijing gay scene is very repressed with no safe bars I was told. Shanghai is slightly better but not much. Hong Kong has several active bars..Works and Propaganda on HK Island especially.

I went to China in... 1998? Was it that long ago already? Anyway, it was part of a "highly organized" tour, as someone put it. It's best way to visit China the first time, I think, plus I had the Lady Evangelica in tow (my mother)... a guided tour was the best way to ensure that she not come into contact with any innocent chinese citizens, and distribute amongst them contraband material (little bibles in mandarin- she brought about 20 of them. The only lucky recipients were our hapless guide and the bartender on the cruiseboat that took us through the Yangtze Gorges.)

In any case, if memory serves, I saw some obviously gay men in Shanghai. And one tourism-worker came out to me (See: "bartender", above).

In my experience, the most gorgeous men are to be found in Chongqing and Xian.

In Shanghai I stayed at a hotel with a swimming pool. do not remember its name.

 

When I came out of the pool 2 little boys offered to help me get dressed. It probably came with a charge. A lounge chair was posted as US$100. NOT to purchase.

 

I suspect that any 3* or better hotel has call boys (men) on tap.

I don't know how long ago you were in Beijing, but the scene there is repressed no more! In fact, I found it wilder than Shanghai when I visited earlier this year. I was taken around by a friend who lives there, so I can't remember the names of the bars he took me to, but they were ROCKING! Packed full of young, well-scrubbed, horny, and definitely not-repressed locals -- including a good sprinkling of money boys -- many of which (money and not) were interested in meeting this rather ordinary, middle-aged American.

In Shanghai this summer, my experience was that many boys will show interest in Westerners, engage in earnest conversation, eventually become quite willing to go up to your room. But after what you thought was a mutual good time, they ask for the money. As though that had been understood all along. Locals said this was not just my misunderstanding but a common money-boy tactic.
