There is a new type of “sizzling hot opera” out there. Forget the old operatic cliché about the “fat lady singing” as exemplified by soprano Montserrat Caballe… and forget those operatic “fat boys” typified by Luciano Pavarotti. The trend in operatic casting nowadays has shifted towards more attractive body types… individuals who can sing and actually look the part. Singers such as Russian diva Anna Netrebko and tenor sensation Juan Diego Florez represent this new breed of operatic personality.

However, one of the hottest operatic properties is baritone Nathan Gunn… a guy who has spent some time working out in the gym… Any of you guys who never thought you would ever consider spending a night at the opera just check out this dude. Stage directors look for excuses to have him appear stripped to the waist. Here he is pictured as Billy in Benjamin Birtten’s "Billy Budd", an opera I would ordinarily despise. No wonder he is referred to as opera’s "Top Gunn"!

Just thought I would bring some culture to this site… plus I like the potential nipple action in the last pic… the 'unbuttoned look' is a nice touch as well...

And you thought hell would freeze over before you would be caught attending the opera…

PS: Sorry guys. Worse than Al Bundy, he’s “Married With (five!) Children”!

I do love the opera.

What's not to like about an art form where every show features 1) the town slut, 2) incest, 3) rape, 4) murder, 5) women with huge metal breasts and VERY loud voices, or any mix-and-match of the above?

(I've left something out of that list, I know.)

Grand opera is a total sensory gratification experience. All of your senses are stroked all at once.

Add hot meat and it's even better. :+

Nathan Gunn is definitely one hot stud. I attended a vocal recital he gave at Alice Tully Hall in New York recently and thought he filled out his tuxedo quite spectacularly. Fantasizing was cut a little short by his piano accompanist - his gorgeous wife! On the other hand, I hope the Metropolitan revives its "Billy Budd" with him in the title role. Meanwhile, we can hope the Met will cast him in something else that incorporates some kind of undress, although at the Met they usually save that for the corps de ballet (since the stars tend towards corpulence).

Nathan Gunn is singing at the Met in December in an new opera, "An

American Tragedy." I believe there are six or seven performances, including a matinee on Christmas Eve. The trend that you describe is a giant step forward, especially in operas like "Billy Budd."

I never saw/hear Luciano Pavarotti or Montserrat Caballe in person, but from listening to their records and CDs, they are certainly two of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century. Both performers have reputations of being less than great actors, but opera would have much less interesting and rewarding over the last 40 years without them. I have not seen Caballe's live performance of "Norma" on DVD, but her reviews have been amazingly good for both her singing and acting.

Gunn is certainly hot as are several other young singers today (most tend by coincidence to be baritones (hence the new term "bari-hunk" which has been going around lately).

Nevertheless, for me Juan Diego Florez is the sexiest opera singer on stage today. Now if you could only get a shirtless picture of him! Believe me, I have been searching for some time :)

WHEN IS SOMEBODY GOING TO WRITE SOMETHING THAT WILL REQUIRE THESE GUYS TO APPEAR ON STAGE IN SPEEDOS????? Is there enough drama in a Chippendales troup for a 2 hour opera?

Maybe this is our wakeup call. Maybe we can pool our money and commission Elton John to write one. We could put on a show to raise the money! My dad has a barn!

Actually one opera that has a lot of "speedo potential" was given recently at New York City Opera, Rossini's "Il Viaggio a Reims". It takes place in a spa/bath-house with the NYCO production featuring a large swimming pool center stage. In addition, it has a large cast so all of the hunks mentioned above would be able to partake in the production... Actually in the City Opera production one of the tenors does loose his shirt and even gets his chest hair pulled by one of the sopranos...

Like I said... it has a lot of potential!

Tannhauser in Geneva

The most recent production of Wagner's Tannhauser in the Geneva Opera featured an "orgy" in the first scene, with frolicking half-naked men and women playing around. No stars, just the choir and ballet. The piece de resistance was a naked, well hung guy, who had a very hard --and I mean HARD-- dick, parading around the stage, showing off his erection, and then "fucking" a girl...A very "osé" and "risqué" scene, staged by Olivier Py, which raised many an eyebrow in Calvinistic Geneva. After the orgy, you proceed to the 3 hour long Tannhauser --a music I personally find sublime--. Py certainly contributed to making this opera a best seller and a definite "must see" in Geneva this season! }( }(

The NY Times today features Teddy Tahu Rhodes, a 6'5", blonde, baritone hunk from New Zealand who is making a splash in the opera world. He could splash in my world ANY time!!!

allo whipped Guy,

I have seen Nathan Gunn twice as Ramiro in L'Heure espagnole and as count Almaviva in Le Nozze; He is really sensational ; very tall and sexy.

Also Juan Diego Flores is quiet a star ; I have seen him in Pessaro in Count Ory and a recital; I do not know if he is gay but he has a lot of gay admirers; there was more show in the theater than on stage.

And with the first naked hard-on in Geneva , opera is again becoming exciting
