This may be the most expensive soap opera ever made. But you can’t go cheap when you’re showing one of the richest women in the world and her very expensive life. Castles, clothes and jewels all nicely represented along with her family and the army of servants who take care of them. As I binge watched through this season I found myself wondering why I care about these people who don’t really do all that much to justify the expense of the British people who fund all this. Yet every supermarket tabloid continues to fuel this odd fascination Americans seem to have with the British royal family. Really it makes no sense. Kind of like porn and I guess the vicarious thrill that might offer. One more guilty pleasure to add to the pile I suppose. I enjoyed every moment.

I saw that Netflix announced the date of the start of Season 3 of The Crown. Olivia Colman (Elizabeth II) and Helena Bonham-Carter (Margaret). I wanted to cum right there. I watched the trailer and it is amazing what Olivia Colman can convey with her eyes in just three seconds. At any rate, I do not get Netflix (right now) so I have not seen either of the previous two seasons. I hope that you who did will enjoy the new one. Let us know if you do.

Helena Bonham-Carter is fantastic as Princess Margaret. And episode 6 with Prince Charles in Wales for his investiture, Queen Elizabeth is wearing the least flattering hat I've ever seen - I wonder if that is historically accurate, I expect it is.

I was very disappointed in the series. Both Olivia and Helena in my opinion miscast. The writing was not up to snuff. The actor who played Prince Philip was excellent as was the actor who played Prime Minister Wilson. The first two seasons were brilliant.

I am sorry to hear that. I had not been able to watch any of the seasons. A while ago I had heard the first two seasons universally acclaimed which definitely made me anxious to watch the third one.

Watch it. The 3rd season is as good as previous ones, even if the focus of the story-line is different. The history is interesting, if you enjoy the personal stories behind the headlines. They didn't delve into the gay issue with the Conservative Prime Minister Heath (that would have been hindsight), other than 'not trusting a man who has never married.'

I have finally been able to get Netflix (streaming) and I really like the whole series. I binged and watched the first two seasons and half of the third. As you say the scripts are extremely interesting if you want more of the personal stories behind the headlines. As a matter of fact it has been extremely interesting to me because my undergraduate work was in British history that focused predominately on a study of the kings/queens and Parliament. This series seems to have, as you say, much more of focus on the personal battles fought within the monarchy and sometimes in a skirmish with the PMs and Parliament. I find the acting to be overall (of what I have watched) to be extremely good. Of course, Claire Foy and Olivia Colman are two different actresses who have two different styles of acting but actually I found Colman's restraint to be a realistic portrayal of how the monarch changed over the years. You get a sense that this is going to happen when you see the very last scene where C. Beaton is trying to take the last photograph and Foy just looks "shell-shocked." And the transformation of Helena Bonham-Carter from Vanessa Kirby shows a realistic trampling down of a somewhat "free spirit" to a still spoiled princess. The production values remain consistently high.

I found Series 3 to be one of the most enjoyable thus far. Each episode addresses a different aspect and/or storyline that impacted the monarch/monarchy. I agree with a previous post that alluded to the fact that Olivia Coleman does a good job of transitioning the Queen into a character that feels recognizable to us now. Claire Foy’s portrayal, as talented as she is, while endearing, was hard to reconcile with the stoicism that seems to embody the bulk of public memory, knowledge, and most recent decades’ recollection of Queen Elisabeth’s image and reign.

A stand out character in Season 3 is Princess Anne.

I was always a big fan of Princess Anne. I am not sure her character as a teen but she seemed the most capable and mature as an adult. It always made me wish that she would inherit the throne rather than her brother. However, I have gotten to like Charles as a public figure much more as years have gone by. Actually, the series made me see why he ended up with his current wife as (being as uninformed as I was) always wondered why he chose her to marry. I did not realize that he had loved (been in love) with her since his early years.

Damn, I'm late to the party on this, but SHEEEEEET is this show good.

And... I'm definitely a Princess Anne.

A Princess Anne? That's interesting. I never realized how great she was before this show. I guess because she kept to her self but she certainly wasn't shy. Very funny. It was interesting how she and Charles got along.

I mean, at the heart of me, I'll always be a Margaret.

Anne just works better for long-term mental health :)

I vaguely remember part of an old Bette Midler monolog in which she clomped one foot on the floor while commenting “Princess Anne loves Mother Nature which is pretty ironic considering what Mother Nature did to Princess Anne.” Don’t ask me why that sticks in my mind.
