Thanks, actually I have to head to DC & Baltimore this weekend for some meetings. I just realized today I will be there on the anniversary of 9-11. I have decided to stay halfway between DC & Baltimore, hopefully Both will be safe that way.

RE: Final Entry, KY_TOP's Diary of Katrina

I have a tendency to go into detail when I write. I seem to remember the small things. Hopefully the small things helped to paint a picture of what it was like to be there. Yes many times we take too much for granted in our daily lives until we find ourself in a situation when those small things are gone.

I am not the best typist so I apologize for my many typos especially Part 5. That part was long and it was late when I finished typing it, didn't take time to proof read it.

KY

I can not think of the words to express how emotional I became reading your "trip report." I can only think of two times I have had a tear in my eyes in the last 20 years. The last time was when I walked home from work in Midtown Manhattan on 9/11. I had seen the reports on TV in my office and it seemed like a Hollywood epic. When I went got home and went out on my roof top deck and looked downtown at the horrific scene I started to cry. Most of us only know Katrina by the TV images. As you intimately understand, being there and living the nightmare first person is 1000% more intense than seeing the news reports.

On another note, the Marriott Corporation went above and beyond the call of duty. I am also a very frequent traveller. I often stay with Marriott. I have a grudge against Marriott because of JW's homophobic attitude. I split my stays with Hilton and Marriott. Now I have a better feeling for Marriott based on its response to this horrible tragedy.

Glad you are safe and sound!

PS: To the MB members. Please forgive any gamatcal or spelling errors. I am on my second double Dewars on the rocks.

I've cried often often the last week while watching CNN or MSNBC or reading articles about Katrina and her devestation. But, as others have said, you made it personal. You told a very moving story.

I'm so glad you're safe!

Letters written and sent

On Tuesday I wrote and mailed 2 letters. One to Mr JW Marriott JR. at Marriott International thanking him and praising his wonderful Renaissance Staff. The second to the Exec VP & Chief Customer Service Officer at Delta. I was told by some friends to wait a few days after my return too write to Delta, giving me time to cool off. I was detailed, respectful, but diplomatic in my letter but making it perfectly clear that I hold Delta completely responsible for being stuck to ride out the worst Hurricane in recent US history. It will be interesting to see if or how the Delta Exec VP responds.

Also I want to thank everyone here for your thoughts, prayers, kind comments and thoughful e-mails. Sometimes this place really is like a family. Dysfunctional sometimes but still a family.

Take Care.

I've gotten a few e-mails from a few LA guys wanting to know when I was returning there and to let me know they would not be home.;)

A local friend wanst to know what disaster I plan to visit next. A guy could start to get paranoid.

I doubt there's much of a lawsuit here, but copies to the editors of several of the country's bigger newspapers might get a reaction. }(

The restrictions and policies we agree to when purchasing airline tickets include quite a bit of verbage about natural disasters and cancellations. I'd imagine there's plenty of legal wiggle room for them. I also can't imagine the corporate lawyers letting them put the company in jeapordy.

Major PR bungle, yes, which could easily be far more costly!

RE: Letters written and sent

You have to decide what you're looking for from Delta. If you simply want an apology and maybe some free miles or a refund, BGP's suggestion to have a lawyer send a letter if you don't hear back is perfect.

If you're still pissed that Delta put hundreds (or more) passenger's lives in danger and don't think there is an appropriate apology for that then I think my suggestion of an open letter to Atlanta newspapers, the BBB, the FTC and FAA would be much more likely to get the attention of people that matter within Delta. The guy you wrote to, it's his job to be placating, apologetic, and sorrowful. But he wasn't the one that made the decisions that trapped you there and he has no influence over those that did (despite empty promises he may make).

It's sounding like the spike in fuel prices and the destruction of southern tourism for the rest of the year combined with the very poor management decision making process you've experienced first hand may drive Delta into bankruptcy shortly anyway, making it all moot.

One thing's for sure, now's not the time to buy tickets on Delta!

That is a good point. I think what I want is for them to admit that they made a grave mistake in canceling so many flights early and a sincere apology. I can't change the past, nor can they. If I get no response or what I consider an insincere or canned apology then the suggestions to write the papers is a good idea.

Don't wait to long to write the News Media, since it will lose THE IMPACT!

It would be a GQQD time to EMAIL FOX News or O'Reily, is you want to get your message across.

Of course, contacting FOX will depend on the other readers getting over their prejudices and permit you to do so.

I received a very nice hand written note from Mr Marriott thanking me for my letter. Also, he stated he was proud of his people and glad I made it home safely. A very pleasant continuation of great service from Marriott.

While it was probably hand-written by an assistant, still a VERY classy response from a corporation that could otherwise have just belched forth a form letter.

They are definitely a customer-oriented corporation!

Thanks for letting us know about this response! It WILL sway my plans when booking hotel accomodations.

RE: Letters written and sent

It's funny how they didn't fail to get a mass e-mailing out to their frequent fliers assuring them that nothing would change as a result of the Chapter 11.

I'm booked on them to Brazil in November. I hold my breath after having read your account of the airline abandoning you and others in New Orleans over financial considerations.
