Peanuts - Gay or Non-Gay?

I've had fun speculating "who would be or wouldn't be gay when they grow up" and maybe what they would do with their lives, with the characters from Charles Schulz' comic strip "Peanuts." Let's see what you think.

 

THE BROWNS:

[em]Charlie[/em] - non-gay. Would probably be confused if he met a gay woman and even more mixed up if he met a gay man.

[em]Sally[/em] - non-gay but has a boatload of gay friends.

[em]Snoopy[/em] - enterprising as he is, he'd probably run an escort agency that includes gay dogs in Amsterdam as part of his financial empire.

 

THE VAN PELTS

[em]Lucy[/em] - non-gay, but constantly mistaken for one

[em]Linus[/em] - oh, puh-lease. Linus is so gay.

[em]Rerun[/em] - oh, puh-lease. Rerun is so Linus.

 

SUPPORTING CAST:

[em]Schroeder[/em] - he's so focused on his music it's hard to tell. As a blonde he'll probably get more than his share of offers from men when he goes to Julliard.

[em]Shermy[/em] - a possibility. Anybody named "Shermy" is going to develop a few gay attributes just from being called that for years and years. He and Schroeder would make a way-cute couple.

[em]The Little Red-Haired Girl (she had a name in one cartoon version, what was it?) - [/em]not enough info for me to guess.

[em]Spike[/em] - (see Charlie Brown above)

[em]Snoopy's Little Sister (she had a name in one cartoon version, what was it?) - [/em] not enough info for me to guess.

[em]Woodstock[/em] - will work for Snoopy but wouldn't really understand gay or not so it doesn't matter.

[em]Violet[/em] - not enough info for me to guess.

[em]Frieda[/em] - not enough info for me to guess.

[em]Franklin[/em] - not enough info for me to guess.

[em]"Peppermint" Patty[/em] - another "oh puh-lease."

[em]Marcie[/em] - See Peppermint Patty. Can you say "Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas"?

[em]Pigpen[/em] - Who could get past that cloud of dust?

 

BONUS POINTS IF YOU CAN REMEMBER WHO THIS IS:

[em]Tapioca Pudding[/em] - not enough info for me to guess.

[em]Cormac[/em] - nope, sorry.

[em]Miss Othmar[/em] - not enough info for me to guess.

[em]Joe Schlabotnik[/em] - not enough info for me to guess.

 

Have I forgotten anybody? Any opinions, dissenting or otherwise?

That's a cute concept but I'm curious why you think Linus and Peppermint Patty would be gay. Because he needs a security blanket and she's a tomboy? I have a male cousin who used to carry around a sock puppet as his security doll until he was almost 10 years old, and he turned out to be straight. I also saw, at my high school reunion, a girl who used to be a major tomboy/jock (she used to get into fistfights at recess, too) and she's straight, as well (she also got drunk at the reunion and was coming on to lots of the guys...including Derek and me). Also at the reunion was a guy who used to call me "fag" when we were in junior high, and guess what? He's gay (that didn't surprise me; lots of homophobes are) and he apologized for giving me so much grief.

 

Anyway, like I said, this was a cute idea, but isn't this the kind of thinking that led that ignorant pig of a father in Florida to beat his 3-year old to death to "turn him straight"?

 

I do, however, like the idea of Snoopy moving to Amsterdam and becoming HooBoy.

As a long time stalker and very infrequent poster, I thought this was a cute speculation so here's my 2 cents. (of all things to get me to post.. ha ha)

 

I agree with most of the suppositions.

 

Frieda - str8 - she was always fussing with her naturally curly hair. Most dykes I know, wouldn't.

Violet - str8 - at one point (TV?) she had a crush her male teacher.

The Little Red-Haired Girl did not have a name in the strip all the way through her moving away. However, the Valentine's special gave her the name Heather... but that came from the show writers, not CMS.

 

Miss Othmar - str8 - you may recall she left, got married, and came back as Mrs. Hagemeyer

Joe Schlabotnik was CB's baseball hero - I would say str8

Belle was Snoopy's only sister.

Snoopy had 4 brothers mentioned in the strips. Spike, Marbles, Andy & Olaf

I thought I was good at remember all of this, but you've made me check a couple of books and do some searching.

 

Tapioca Pudding was the girl whose father was trying to license her on everything like a sports star... lunchboxes, trading cards, etc. She would have grown up with a complex and bi.

Who are Feron, Lila, Poochie, Jose Peterson (str8), Floyd (str8), and Maynard (gay)?

Snoopy's sister was named Belle, I do believe (basically it was just a dog that looked exactly like Snoopy only with eyelashes and a bow in her hair I believe)

 

I do not think that Linus or Rerun would be gay. Linus would have issues (maybe performance anxiety) but he would not be gay. Rerun would look at Linus and change his ways right away.

 

Actually, Violet and Patty, I think, were so bitchy they would end up in one unhappy marriage after another (which they would deserve for being so bitchy)

 

And yes, Peppermint Patty would be a big time, tool belt wearing, mullet hair styled, driving my pick up truck dike. How can anyone even question that?

Hey wait! I don't want to fall into the "florist & hairdresser only" category either. I would never want to stereotype and should have elaborated on the reasoning. If I remember correctly, Joe had a gf or wife mentioned.... I think she even was the one responsible for him not attending the baseball dinner and sitting with CB at his table. (could be off on that one... I'm doing it from memory)

 

Now the answers to the challenge:

Lila - Snoopy's original owner

Poochie - a girl that played with Snoopy when he was a puppy, I believe while he was still at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. She was also the first person to call CB by his full name.

Jose Peterson - Peppermint Patty's star baseball player on her team.

Floyd - the kid at camp with the crush on Marcie

Maynard - tutored Peppermint Patty at school.

 

I like MMK's characterization of Violet & Patty... bitchy and one failed marriage after another. LOL

 

And while Rick has a valid point about Peppermint Patty being after CB. I still think once she hit puberty, it was girls all the way! LOL

6 books I had to go through to find this one. 6! Didn't take that long fortunately... I just kind of skimmed.

Miss Othmar had the students bringing in eggshells to create a little igloo village. Linus kept forgetting his. He worried that the lack of eggshells among everything else was causing her to crack up. The day he finally brought them, she was gone. She left to get married. He wrapped up the eggshells to send to her as a wedding present.

 

And there ya go! Oh, Bill Melendez voiced Snoopy.

I beg to differ: Miss Othmar cracked up once before. Everyone in class has to bring in envelopes, for milk money, for hot dogs, for this, for that. She finally cracked up and went "envelope happy" and was quite the sight, running down the hall throwing envelopes right and left.
