Who's your favorite athlete? (for real, not sexually)

  • Not a favorite athlete, but a good guy:

Texas Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi, donated a mansion and 100 acres of land in southwest Missouri to charity that provides camps for children with special needs and chronic illnesses and their siblings.

The donation of the 32,000-square foot home to Camp Barnabas was made Friday. It was listed for $9,418,400, according to Realtor.com, at the time of the donation.

Hamels said in a news release that he and his wife wanted to help the charity make children's dreams come true.

"Seeing the faces, hearing the laughter, reading the stories of the kids they serve; there is truly nothing like it," he said in the statement. "Barnabas makes dreams come true, and we felt called to help them in a big way."

The mansion and land is near Table Rock Lake near Reeds Springs. Heidi Hamels grew up in Buffalo, Missouri.

An attorney for the couple told the Springfield News-Leader that they thought the mansion would be their dream home. However, when Hamels was traded to the Rangers, they moved to Texas and never moved into the Missouri house.

Greg Louganis, of course. I can't express sufficiently how proud of him I am.

Missy Giove. I love Mountain Biking, and although I respect and admire Downhill Mountain Biking, it lacks the grace of Freestyle. Still, to be an out lesbian professional athlete in the mid 90s was brazen and hot.

BRIAN PETERSON – STAR TRIBUNE FILE

Police say the father of Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes, former Twins pitcher Pat Mahomes, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication during the Red Raiders' game at TCU over the weekend.

Officer Tamara Valle of the Fort Worth Police Department said Monday that former major league pitcher Pat Mahomes was arrested about 5:45 p.m. Saturday by an off-duty officer working the game while the elder Mahomes was in the TCU student section in the stands of Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Public intoxication is a Class C misdemeanor. Valle was not sure when Pat Mahomes was released from jail.

Pat Mahomes was taken to the Fort Worth jail before the end of the game, which Texas Tech won 27-24 in double overtime. His son scored on a 15-yard touchdown in the first overtime.

Mahomes, 46, was drafted by the Twins in 1988 and pitched for the team from 1992-1996. He pitched for five other teams in a major league career that lasted until 2003.

Are you saying that the elder Pat Mahomes is your favorite athlete because he was cited for public intoxication at his son's college football game? This is your thread after all, so why would you bring up old sins of the father on your own thread unless you admired the father for his bad behavior?

Sorry. It is confusing and difficult to understand why you would want to derail your own thread. :confused:o_O:eek:

I was pointing out that, as cute & talented as you think the son is, his father is nothing special to look at, nor was he anything special as a pitcher.

The Bucks Joined the NBA’s Elite Around the Time Giannis Blew the Warriors Off Their Own Floor

How do you know when an upstart contender hits another level? It looks a lot like what Antetokounmpo did in Thursday’s second quarter at Golden State.

There’s a moment when it all lines up—when what you’ve been imagining and theorizing about becomes real, and all that’s left is just to sit back and watch. It happened at Oracle Arena on Thursday, with about five minutes left in the second quarter.

The Milwaukee Bucks held a slim 44-41 lead over the Golden State Warriors. Through the game’s first 19 minutes, the two heavyweights—in one corner, the sport’s dominant dynasty and the West’s top seed; in the other, a challenger with the East’s best point differential—had fought in a phone booth, with neither side able to get hot from behind the 3-point arc or create more than two possessions’ worth of separation. And then, with 5:01 to go in the first half, Giannis Antetokounmpo checked back in, and everything clicked:

All of a sudden, that three-point lead ballooned to 15. The Bucks had just crushed the two-time-defending NBA champions in their own gym. By the end of the barrage, Antetokounmpo had totaled nine points, two rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block in barely three minutes. On a court also occupied by two in-their-prime NBA MVPs, he was the best player—by far.

An arena that’s grown accustomed to seeing the hometown team render the final period meaningless got to witness the visitors insisting on 12 minutes of garbage time. After the 134-111 pummeling, Antetokounmpo verbalized the message he and the Bucks had just sent: “We’ve arrived.”

By now, you probably know the reasons for that arrival. New head coach Mike Budenholzer has overhauled the Bucks’ schemes, emphasizing spacing and 3-point shooting on offense, and trying to force opponents to take lower-value midrange jumpers on the defensive end. The early returns have been remarkable: Milwaukee ranks second in the NBA in points scored per possession and third inpoints allowed per possession, the only team in the league in the top five in both categories, and is off to its best start in 47 years.

At the center of it all, as always, was Giannis. He’s not really the most natural fit in a five-out, shoot-it-as-soon-as-you-get-it offense—he is currently shooting a crisp 8.7 percent from 3-point range—but he’s the engine that makes it all go, because his presence induces defensive panic on every possession.

Knowing that Antetokounmpo can get to the rim in two steps from virtually anywhere inside of half court, and that he is shooting 73 percent once he gets there, leaves even well-drilled and well-intentioned defenders cheating a step his way. That creates all the opening he needs to ping the ball around the perimeter, stay one step ahead of the rotations of scrambling defenders, and find great looks. Most nights, those looks come from outside, with Milwaukee ranking second in the league in 3-point attempts per game and first in makes. But as the Curry-led Warriors know better than anyone, when you stretch a defense out far enough, it snaps, and from there, you can get whatever you want: The Bucks scored a season-high 84 points in the paint at Oracle.

“Very similar to four years ago here,” Curry told reporters on Wednesday. “A change of scenery sometimes helps. You get a little boost of energy, a little shift of focus and perspective, and that little bit of difference can unlock something.”

So far, it looks like it’s unlocked Antetokounmpo, allowing him to be the most fully formed and devastating version of himself we’ve ever seen—one capable of not just snatching a game out of the hands of two of the five best players in the world, but doing it so stoically that how wild it is barely registers.

. The Bucks have arrived. Giannis is here. The future is now.

With 35 games under the Milwaukee Bucks’ belts, the team’s superstar is not slowing down. At this point, the 2018-19 NBA Most Valuable Player award is Giannis Antetokounmpo’s to lose, even if he won’t admit it. If he finishes with his current stats, he’d be the only player in the history of the NBA to average at least 28 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists (per-36 minutes). He’s otherworldly.

“Giannis appears in the top-20 leaderboards in the following categories: total points, total field goals attempted and made, total free throws attempted and made, total defensive (and overall) rebounds, total blocks, field goal percentage, true shooting percentage, effective field goal percentage, player efficiency rating, defensive rating, win shares (offensive, defensive, total, and per-48 minutes), box plus-minus (both offensive and defensive) and value over replacement player.”

These hips don’t lie.

WWE legend The Rock claimed he was “bionic from the waist down” after posting a new hip thrust personal best of 460 pounds this month — and shared footage of the feat with his 126 million Instagram followers.

But there’s bionic strength — and freakish power.

NBA MVP contender Giannis Antetokounmpo claims to have added 50 pounds of pure muscle since he entered the league in 2014 and his muscles aren’t for show.

The Greek Freak raised an eyebrow like The Rock used to during his professional wrestling heyday when he saw the now actor’s personal best hip thrust on Instagram.

Alongside teammate Pat Connaughton, Antetokounmpo raised the bar and issued a challenge for The Rock to come and lift with him in the Milwaukee Bucks’ so-called Iron Paradise while thrusting 570 pounds.

Antetokounmpo (24) is about half The Rock’s age (46) but that’s still an impressive mark.

For comparison, NFL veteran and world famous gym junkie James Harrison has thrusted up to 675 pounds while some powerlifters have reached 800 pounds.

The forward’s workouts are becoming the stuff of legend — and making him one of the most physically dominant players the league has seen.

He’s getting as many dunks a game as anyone since Shaquille O’Neal while leading the Bucks to the NBA’s best record thus far.

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is riding highfollowing his first career playoff win Saturday over the Indianapolis Colts.

Mahomes, who completed 27-of-41 passes for 278 yards in snowy Kansas City, appeared to celebrate the 31-13 victory with girlfriend Brittany Matthews, who shared a photo of the couple cuddling up outside Arrowhead Stadium.

“Just a few East Texas kids that had to grow up a little faster than expected,” Matthews posted on Instagram after the game.

Mahomes, 23, a native of the Lone Star state, attended college at Texas Tech, before being selected by the Chiefs 10th overall in the 2017 draft.

As for Matthews, she continues to be Mahomes’ biggest fan on game days. Following November’s epic thriller between the Rams and the Chiefs in Los Angeles, where Kansas City fell 54-51, the University of Texas at Tyler grad made sure she was there for her beau following the crushing loss.

“Sure missed this guy #greatgame,” she posted on social media at the time.

Expect Matthews to cheer Mahomes next week, when the Chiefs battle either the Chargers or the Patriots in the AFC Championship.

It's Patrick Mahomes, the 23-year-old wonder boy Chiefs quarterback vs. Tom Brady, the 41-year-old five-time super bowl winning quarterback of the Patriots. The Patriots chose Brady as their sixth round draft pick back in 2000, while the Chiefs picked Mahomes as their tenth round overall draft pick in 2017!

So far, in only his first full season as starting quarterback for the KC Chiefs, Mahomes has achieved quarterback statistics matching or exceeding records set by every quarterback in modern football history, including Tom Brady! Quite the match up!

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was courtside Monday night in New York taking in the Milwaukee Bucks’ game against the Brooklyn Nets.

It’s not the first time that Clinton has attended Bucks games, having appeared most prominently at Game 6 of last year’s first-round series in Milwaukee. Clinton is close friends with Bucks co-owners Mark Lasry and Wes Edens — who have been donors to the Democratic Party in the past — and he joined them and fellow co-owner Jamie Dinan to take in their team’s 113-94 victory over the Nets.

But despite his close personal relationship to the owners — he and Hillary Clinton attended the wedding of Lasry’s daughter — the 42nd president’s interest and knowledge regarding the NBA team comes across as very real.

When interviewed by NBATV Monday night, Clinton expressed his excitement about the play of Giannis Antetokounmpo and the moves the Bucks made to add to the roster in the past year.

“He’s unbelievable, and he’s really come into his own this year,” the 72-year-old Clinton said of the Greek Freak. “I love to watch him. But he’s got a lot of good help now. You know it’s a different team now … They got George Hill. George Hill is reliable, he’s a great team player, he adds value to every place he ever plays. They’ve done things that works, and (Brook) Lopez is doing great there.”

Later in speaking with writer Chris Sheridan, Clinton once again praised Antetokounmpo calling him a “once in a generation player, one of the great players in the league.”

“This is becoming a team. It’s a different, strong team. The veterans they picked up are adding value. They can put three 7-footers on the floor if they want to and still move up and down the court. It’s a great, fascinating thing. I can’t wait to see what becomes of them,” Clinton added.

“They’ve got some work to do, but they have the personnel now that can really do something exceptional.”

Clinton certainly sounded like someone who frequently is tuning into Bucks games with his answers. And he’s justified in his excitement for watching: Milwaukee is first in the entire league with a 39-13 record and league-best plus-10 scoring differential.

Baseball season is almost here so I’ll throw in the Cubs’ Willson Contreras.

The kid was recruited in Venezuela as a teenager, and impressed everyone who saw him in the minor leagues — so much so that when he finally got called up in 2016 he got a standing ovation before his first at-bat. That first at-bat lasted one pitch, which landed in the center field bleachers. He was on the squad that won the World Series in 2016.

Through it all he’s remained a humble kid who routinely visits children’s hospitals and such unannounced and without media.

In 2018 he made his first all-star team and managed to bring his parents from Venezuela. MLB made a video:

He’s an easy kid to root for.

Some MVP candidates take out ads in local newspapers. Other MVP candidates appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo will appear on a regional cover of the popular weekly magazine for the April 8 edition, part of a cover story by Chris Ballard called “How to Coach a Unicorn.” The image shows Giannis soaring over members of the San Antonio Spurs.

Unlocking Giannis Antetokounmpo: How the Bucks Turned the Greek Freak into the MVP

https://www.si.com/nba/2019/04/03/giannis-antetokounmpo-milwaukee-bucks-mike-budenholzer-mvp-playoffs

In person, Giannis is earnest, thoughtful and intense. Teammates and coaches use words like perfectionist and self-critical, citing penitent midnight shooting sessions. The phrase work ethic comes up repeatedly, modified by “unreal” and “insane.” Says (coach Mike) Budenholzer, “He craves ways to get better, craves information, he seeks out Hakeem Olajuwon, Kobe. He really believes in making those steps. He wants to be the best f------ player in the league and the world...”

A star is built: Giannis is the best basketball player alive

At 24 years old, Giannis Antetokounmpo is the best basketball player in the world. He is the best offensive player on a top-five NBA offense. He's the best defensive player on the No. 1 defense. As the catalyst of an incredible basketball system, Giannis has led the Milwaukee Bucks to the best record in the NBA and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

Antetokounmpo isn’t just this season’s MVP. He is the perfect two-way superstar for where the NBA is right now — and where it’s going…

Simply put, he has become the most self-sufficient dunker we’ve seen in decades. After dropping 19 unassisted dunks as a rookie in 2013-14, Giannis reached 116 this season — the only guy to top 100 for as long as the league has been tallying play-by-play data… there’s just something especially satisfying about an unassisted driving dunk. It’s such a dramatic display of dominance. It’s why in many of his best highlights, Giannis looks like a man among boys.

But then you remember this is the best basketball league on Earth.

Every NBA player would love to dribble up the court and slam it home at will. They can’t. Yes, that unassisted dunk stat is a little esoteric, and it might not translate directly to wins, but it does reveal just how unprecedented this kid’s dominance is right now.

Coaches design entire defensive philosophies around protecting the paint. Antetokounmpo doesn’t care. With only a dribble or two and some crafty footwork, he can transport the ball from the perimeter to the hoop and hammer it home. Basketball rarely looks so easy…

I like this Curry. Steph Curry....

To name a few Lebron, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Russel Westbrook.

The NBA has had many brother combos play in the league, but never before have 2 brothers faced each other in the playoffs in a conference final or later… until now.

2-time MVP, future-hall-of-famer Steph Curry of the dynastic Warriors is facing younger brother Seth of the upstart Trail Blazers.

What’s a parent to do? Mom Sonya & Dad Dell (a former NBA player himself) flipped a coin before Game 1 to decide who would root for whom.

It was pretty easy to identify the results of the coin flip.

BNG-L-WARRIORS-0515-67.jpg

No word on what they did for Game 2.
