But I am surprised (unless I am wrong) nobody mentioned Making Love (1982) I was in my early 20s, in a very important and decisive moment of my life when I decided to come out to all my straight friends in Italy, after I did it to my family. I went by myself to the movie theatre, when they showed it on TV (yes! In Italy!) I remember that I taped it and few days later I gathered a few close friends at home and asked them to watch it on VHS. Another amazing homo-erotic film is Derek Jarman's 1976 'Sebastiane' - beautifully shot and amazing men; groundbreaking at the time, it was the first non-porn film to feature an actor with an erection. Though it's not a gay film, Ken Russell's 'Women in Love' has the famous nude wrestling scene with Alan Bates & Oliver Reed = an erotic dream cum true:} Not for the faint-of-heart: 'The Killing of Sister George' is a biting, caustic satire--with a terrific performance by Beryl Reid. More recent flick: The Trip (2002) tells a funny + heartbreaking story, with two very *hot* leads: Steve Braun & Larry Sullivan (+ a hysterical cameo by Jill St. John). Becket Posted April 2, 2017 Share Posted April 2, 2017 I had forgotten about Jeffery. Very well done and a good attempt at depicting dating in the 80's early 90's. Patrick Stewart is the coolest straight guy and a great friend to the community. Some mentioned Midnight Express. Agreed it was very erotic, and for the 70's it was about as far as they would go. All this just reminds me how desperate I was to see some positive depiction of what I was feeling as a teen and early adult. ANYTHING I could find I went to see over and over again. Even a scene in TV's Starsky and Hutch where they hugged was affirming. Hall (Dexter) in Hedwig, who was phenomenal in the role and in great shape body-wise! I'd love to have seen a number of the others who stepped into this excellent production over its run though, and I'm sure Mr. Criss was very exciting as Hedwig! It's a wonderful role, which I never realized when I saw the original movie because I thought only John Cameron Mitchell could do the role well. I think that scene you're talking about is when he is sitting on the couch with his grandfather, and his grandfather (who obviously loves, and accepts him) either asks or says something to the effect whether they ever taught him shame (without ever mentioning his orientation). Now... James Broughton made some groovy "experimental" cinema. A must own DVD is Kino's Big Joy, a nifty biography on him. Lots of extras and outtakes along with the documentary. Watched that one more than once, so it is worth purchasing rather than renting. What I like about the first wave of gay storylines that hit Hollywood in the late sixties (before all of the "normal stuff" like Sunday Bloody Sunday and Casey Donovan in Boys In The Sand) is how all over the place it is. Like The Killing of Sister George... and The Fox, The Sergeant and Reflections in a Golden Eye. Those movies were pretty depressing though. More amusing, in a very bad but campy way, is The Staircase with Rex Harrison and Richard Burton. Those two were fighting over Liz Taylor in Cleopatra some six years earlier, but here they were just simply... fighting. The scene of Harrison mocking Burton as he rises naked from the bathtub clearly shows they were playing gay-for-pay in the worse sense. We had lunch & talked about it, and I asked her what the movie was; the IMDB reviews on it said something like "one of the worst cliched coming-out stories ever filmed". I'll try to remember the name of the film, Mom didn't even remember it but remembered one of the actresses (whose name I have since forgotten) and that helped me track it down.
