Groundskeeper Willie on Scotland's referendum on independence.

What fascinates me the most is all the questions independence would raise. Will Scotland become a republic like Ireland, or remain a kingdom? What currency will they use? Will they be allowed to join the EU? NATO? Will the Queen be forced to sell Balmoral Castle? What will be immigration consequences? Because of all the oil wealth, I suspect that independence will squeak by. We'll know soon!

Will the UK's flag change?

The Union Jack without Scotland?

Or a new flag based on the English Saint George cross and the symbols of Whales and Northern Ireland?

From what I understand from a friend in Scotland, who's now waiting for the results with bated breath (and who last I heard wasn't sure how she was going to vote), independence will not rid them of the Queen (to her chagrin). From what I heard on NPR yesterday, whether Scotland will control oil revenues in the event of independence is an open question, as there's a pre-existing law that divides oil revenue up among the component parts of the UK in accordance with population. That means Scotland only gets about 8 or 9% of it currently. A "yes" vote for independence will almost undoubtedly mean litigation on this point.

They would also keep the pound in exchange for English-Welsh-Northern Irish (not British anymore) remaining in Scotland, if the yes wins by little, Tony Blair and he's embarrassing behavior with Bush going to war in Iraq would be one of the reasons the Scots wanted to break away from the empire they helped create.

Don't worry, Daddy is available to become their new monarch and he sure knows how to wear a kilt, of so I've heard!
