So I got sent this link from an escort who saw this article on Reddit. Thought I'd post this here. The study was done in Prague, but I'm surprised at how this research fits a lot of guys I meet on rentmen.

I also made a mistake in the Title, the article clearly states that the reason for most men becoming escorts was "Decidedly Financial"

Overnight rates seem very reasonable. Thx for sharing.

Like others here, I found the article interesting, but also I had some serious issues with the methodology and the results.

Admittedly they interviewed only a small number of escorts: "40 male escorts and sex workers over a period of months in 2011," does not really give one the statistics needed for an in-depth analysis - especially as the number includes BOTH those working on-line and those working in bars and clubs only. Just as a for-instance, Gay Romeo lists 347 guys advertising just today - and the number fluctuates, and many others are "on the road" traveling to other European cities most of the year. There are other CZ sites that list escorts too, and then there are those who work out of private "houses of boys" found in and around Prague.

The amount of money they make is not a lot: while my own experience in Prague (and Budapest) is also of young men doing this primarily for economic reasons, many of them do not have the wherewithal to save, put aside, or invest; rather the money goes into expensive clothes and shoes, travel to other capitals seeking clients (often traveling two or three together to save $$$), maintaining cars, and for many of the straight or bi guys, supporting a wife and/or children, paying for gym memberships and for quite a few into the gym scene, shelling out money for steroids for better muscle development.

In terms of their background, the questions on relationships with parents and childhood were very general and did not leave room for nuance. Many keep their escorting life private, and do not inform their parents (embarrassed or ashamed to admit they are doing it), and even if both parents are living together, the parental relationship would not be described as loving although that was a choice in the sample. Rather because they come from homes where loving relationships are not the norm, it becomes difficult if not impossible for some to form lasting relationships with their peers (of either sex), and there is a glaring omission of drug and alcoholic dependency or abuse among the sex workers - nothing is even asked which would make their life sound, yes, LESS THAN idyllic. But the dark side is many working both independently and in the bar scene get involved in both alcohol and drugs (and very much into cigarettes and other things to smoke). I found this omission a bit disconcerting.

Admittedly there are a few examples of young men who make it out of the industry and find good, legitimate jobs and attain a good education and skills (often paid for by their years as an escort), but the numbers are not high.

true, the study's conclusions are drawn from a small sample population. I would assume this study was done in order to show reasons for a larger study and hopefully obtain funding. Being that a number of my friends are research fellows at Stanford and Berkley, I know that most of them will publish on a study 3 or 4 times, with each new published article building upon or refining the findings from the previous published study. So I can safely conclude that there will be more research and findings to come. I just think it's great that there are people out there that are willing to take on this subject from a scientific prospective and hopefully curb the public's perception on so many of these wonderful boys.
