Tom Daley, the Olympic diver, came out this morning in a short YouTube video announcement:

 

Short? I found the video long-winded, apologetic, and wishy-washy. "I hope I'm still OK. I still fancy girls. I hope you'll still like me." I mean, he is a ripped stud, but, get a spine, dude.

Well, he is still very young. Lots of guys don't come out until much later in life, even in this era when being out carries much less stigma.

Cut the boy some slack. He's only 19 years old, for shit's sake! I earned my doctorate before he was born!

Is he still "discovering himself?" Hell, yeah! And, often, the first step in that direction is to think of yourself as being "bi." Also, we should remember that he has a professional future to safeguard. He has endorsement contracts to protect, and some of those contracts are predicated upon his sexual appeal in the broadest sense ... i.e., inclusive of women. So, regardless of where he may be in his "coming out to himself," he HAS to say "I still fancy girls" to protect that "investment" for his contract partners.

 

Personally, I'd love it if he'd switch professional paths and took up Escorting. If the boy shags even as remotely good as he looks he'd quickly earn a massive pile of cash.

He has always been so obviously gay and has such a gay following that I had no idea he wasn't out until he came out yesterday. From my facebook feed it's clear I'm not alone.

 

Obviously there are family issues and he is still becoming comfortable with himself. Which is fine, because we each are where we are on our journey and can't be anywhere else. What it's like to be so famous and accomplished and deal with this in such a public way I can only begin to fathom.

Boo hoo. I also earned my doctorate waaaaaaaaay before he was born, and--guess what--I came out when I was 18. It was a whole lot less accepted then, and I just said to people "I don't want to lie, so I have to tell you I'm gay." There are lots of gay guys who've come out as totally gay, and still have a very loyal female following: Matt Bomer, Matt Dallas, Jonathan Bennett, Darren Criss, Lance Bass, Zachary Quinto, Ricky Martin, Wentworth Miller, and NPH all come to mind.

Well, I don't have a doctorate, but I have you beat in terms of the age at which I came out. (I was still in high school, out to my family and all of my friends and teachers at high school -- and this was in the 1970s in a small town with rampant homophobia.) I get your point, but my point is that everyone has his own coming out journey. Despite amazing advances in gay rights over the past few decades, it's obviously still not easy for a lot of guys to come out -- even some who are a lot older than Mr. Daley. While I would prefer to live in a world where every gay/bi man and woman came out as soon as they identified themselves as such -- in part because I think that would ultimately change a lot of homophobes' minds because so many more people would realize they actually know and love gay people -- I don't fault any specific individual for coming out in a different way than I did.

From what I've read DLB does go through them as in revolving door kind of thing for the Hollywood Hotties. Good for him.

 

Nice but I think they're too alike though. Be like dating your twin.

 

I'll take DLB over Daley. He's not only good looking himself but very experienced and kind of a freak in the bedroom from what I've heard. Daley's smart for hooking up with him.
