Discreet vs. Discrete

Not to be a stickler (having recently been called out on a couple of my own typos) but just for a chuckle--and since discretion is mentioned so often in advertising and forum posts related to the activity we all enjoy--here's a helpful guide to the difference between being DISCREET and being DISCRETE:

http://www.dailywritingtips.com/the-difference-between-discreet-and-discrete/

It's funny to think that some of us who mean to say "I can keep a secret" are accidentally implying "Don't expect me to hug you."

Its really annoying that their are so many people out they're who don't know when there supposed to be using discrete vs. discreet. Its in you're best interests to know.

Lee, you are a discrete human being who is also discreet. :D

This is similar to the difference between complement and compliment... One ostensibly knows the difference and with any luck one does not get them confused... but they are also words which can easily get transposed either via a typo or inadvertently.

So my compliments to those who are able to be discreet when it comes to this hobby that we all enjoy... Hopefully I got that right or else I just said that I give counterparts to those who are able to be unconnected from out hobby... or something like that... give or take... that is...

... and to funguy... your certainly right about you're assertion! :)

I never knew that there was a difference between discrete and discreet. But I did know the difference between compliment and complement.. Thanks for the education. :)

Does "discrete" mean that you don't hug people? I always saw it defined as the opposite of continuous. For example, a discrete variable is one that can take values 1, 2, 3, and 4. A continuous variable can take the values 1 through 4 (including 1.3). Outside of mathematics, I've mostly seen it used as "discrete effect."

I've looked at life from both sides now

From win and lose and still somehow

It's life's illusions I recall

I really don't know life at all

Well it could ... if you take a playful approach to the separate from others part of the definition ... which I did.

separate from others

Exactly! :D We have all had at least one or two escorts who were only too discrete in this fashion.

To help pick the way, herewith 'umbly offered a Dictionary of Escort Adspeak...

Discrete: Discreet.

Discreet: I will write about you on my blog.

Can host: I share a 1-bedroom apartment with several other guys.

New to the business: My 4th stage name in as many months.

Prefers email contact: I may answer your inquiry in a month or two.

Seeking generous gentlemen: Prepare to be upsold.

Selective: Usually meaningless. Occasionally: I will see you if you send a face pic and I like your looks, or the rent is due.

18yo: 16yo.

29yo: 37yo.

Versatile top: I will top you, or I will lie there while you get yourself off, your choice.

Versatile bottom: See Versatile top. (The occasional exception -- Boyfriend material!)

Handsome: Plain, but my ego compensates.

Model looks: So self-absorbed, you'll pay me to leave.

Not your typical escort: Your typical escort.

Open-minded: Happy to listen to your requests before I tell you all the things I don't do.

Very open-minded: Either (1) into PNP and bareback, or (2) still weirded out by having to touch strangers.

...What did I miss?

LOL. You should see what happens to my voice/texts! I sent one to an escort to set up a date and didn't review it first. When he replied, it was "?????????" and, "you know i don't do that." I consider all incorrect grammar and other oddities to simply be typos.

I followed the link and have just a comment to add about this example which may be the author being funny in his all too uneventful life.

"I just arrived in Dubai and was wondering if anyone knows of a discrete internet cafe, ideally with private rooms…"

I don't think whatever this person is thinking of doing is a good idea. The NSA/US Government and the Government of Dubai are likely close. One call from the NSA to Dubai, after they've heard/watched what this person is doing in the private room of an internet cafe may mean separation from an important body part in Dubai. Or after water torture, near life in limbo at Guantanamo. I'm not paranoid, I'm an American. :)

You're right, and I have the same viewpoint regarding texts and emails. Although people who mistype "now" for "not", or vice versa, do make one pause and wonder if they really took the second to look over what they typed.

I came across these rules to write good over on George Takei's facebook page. And if you are on facebook, and you aren't a fan of his, you are missing out on some seriously good stuff. Funny and serious as well.

And another one I just came across that applies:

i believe that the ,"discreet,' that applies to our biz is the word, "discreet." I have been escorting so long i almost think that discreet is my middle name! lol! In all seriousness I still practice the art of discretion in the biz. I find it very disturbing that some of the younger generation of pros are getting a bit reckless with it. It almost seems as if the definition of discretion on a practical daily basis is changing. For example when I started in this biz a long time ago in a galaxy far far away an escort would NEVER call a client! Horrors! An escort would never speak to a client in public unless first spoken to. double horrors!!! The pressure for the change is actually in some part the fault of the clients. I had a client i had seen once call me the other day and he was mad that i had NOT contacted him. I had to politely explain to him that that is not how the game is played. For an escort to contact a client for biz is an act of desperation in my opinion and a direct violation of the PRIME DIRECTIVE. I know i am ver very old school but my method has worked for 20 years. Thousands have come and gone from the biz in those years, including (sadly) all of my apprentices, but as Elton sings, "I'm still standin..." http://www.rentboy.com/magicmikey

I am so happy you brought this up. It has been bugging me for years. As a former English teacher (joyously retired now!!), discrete/discreet is like nails on a chalk board to me! I have also seen it spelled diskreet, diskrit and discrate. I once mentioned this in a posting, and I was lambasted for being a snob, elitist, holier-than-thou, etc. The attitude that it doesn't matter how you write something as long as you write something really depresses me. Of COURSE it matters. Proper use of our beautiful language shows care, concern and basic intelligence. Why are people so frightened that if they can spell correctly, people will think they're trying to be superior. Good spelling shows class. I could go on and on but I'll refrain. I felt like I was shrieking in the wilderness until I read this morning's post! I'm so happy that their are others out they're who fill the same weigh I dew. Its just grate. Thank you for your thyme and I hope I've been diskreet enough in righting and heiring my vues.
