This guy writes about procuring men and women for people like Cukor, Hepburn, Clift and many others. And servicing a lot of them himself.

 

I didn't think it was a great read, but still interesting. One part especially, where it talks about how very difficult it was to get porn back in the 1940's.

 

I think this guy was mentioned in Arthur Laurents' autobiography.

It is so badly written that I couldn't get through it in spite of my intense curiosity about the events he describes. It's just an awful book!

I didn't read it. I listened to it, and that helped a lot. Some of it really surprised me like the stuff about Spencer Tracy.

I have never held to much stock in "heresay" after all those commented on have Passed in some cases Year's Ago!

 

It just leaves the AUTHOR of such stories to be the one to go to the Bank! But some people like to believe whatever.

yes but didnt the book strike you as a load of unsubstantiated nonsense? Also, for someone who was supposedly at so many hollywood parties, even the non-sex ones, why is there not even ONE photo of him with any of the celebs he dishes so viciously? I treated it as total bull..........

Oh yeah! An invaluable addition to Books-On-Tape! This is wonderful news. Now I can "read" it and my hands will be free to do other things should the reading be so inspiring.

Bowers first came to public attention when he was the main source of William J. Mann's biography, "Kate" in 2007. That was the first time that anyone wrote about the Hepburn-Tracy relationship as non-sexual. I believed Mann because he had already written a number of gay non-fiction books that were not questioned. Two examples are the following: "Wisecracker: The Life and Times of William Haines" and "Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood, 1910-1969."

 

I understand why people do not believe Bowers, I would not have either but for my close reading of Mann's previous books.
