In his day, Boy George wrote some very good (if you believe that there are such things) pop songs. There were a lot of terribly weak bands out back then because MTV was just starving for visual performers. I didn't really get his look back then, but even I thought that the video for "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" was subtly sharp -- with him getting ushered out of highbrow places. "Time" is my favorite Culture Club song though...

"Church of the Poison Mind" was my favorite big hit.

 

I think they were popular because they were pretty good at mixing musical genres and influences into catchy New Wave songs, and CC knew how to take advantage of the music video craze back when MTV actually showed music videos!
