Capetown is definitely a fantastic place to visit in SA. But, one has to be very cautious, as HIV and AIDS is rampant there, according to reports from friends who work there. However, the guys are very friendly, and love Americans. The scenery is fantastic, the wine country nearby is outstanding, and the city is worth the visit. Plus you can go scuba diving with sharks, go on safari near by and generally find everything you might want to see in South Africa nearby. Check out gay cities for Capetown as well as just google Capetown and see what you find that might be attractive.

Diverdan is correct. Cape Town is a tremendous place to visit, and the landscape of beaches, vineyards and mountains is spectacularly beautiful. And yes, safe sex is very important - make sure you take the condoms and lube you need with you. Assuming you are asking about commercial fun in the city, there is little organised now. Years ago, there were male brothels and saunas. Now there are guys advertising in the local paper's classified section, and guys online (manhunt, gaydar etc). There are still gay bars and guys are friendly; some may be commercially-minded. And lots of gay men use the big gyms (Virgin Active) to meet others.

The Gay nude Beach at Sandy Bay (in Llandudno, south of Cape Town look for the Sandy Bay parking lot) is both one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and has lovely flat rocks for sunning and cruising and some nice bushes/trails for the same. Also a beautiful walk to get there.

 

There is a small gay area -- like literally one block -- with a couple of bars. On weekends the men start there, then proceed to The Hothouse sex club, where one can actually have a very good time.

 

As one of the above posters mentioned, the Virgin Active Gym is a good place to go because a) it's a terrific gym, b) with some very, very, very hot men, c) some of whom are clearly gay or at least gay friendly.

I should add two things:

 

South Africa in general and Cape Town in particular -- gorgeous, full of promise, and so depressingly fucked up -- you will not meet anyone there who is hopeful about the country's future. If, when you travel, you can't avoid focusing on social justice issues, you might decide to choose a different destination.

 

In Cape Town, be very, very careful of where you go and when you go there. Certain areas are fine at night, but use your city sense (if you have any) -- and Uber is your friend.

i think that’s true. There are very slim pickings nowadays. You’d have to use the usual apps to meet guys and some will be happy to find a generous man.

 

As @Joeysf said, the gay scene is small now, where as 10-20 years ago there were many options (escorts advertising, male brothels in the CBD, sauna with sex, nude beaches with cruising). Of the public sex venues, only The Hothouse remains.

 

Crime is a problem but there is also robust policing in the city centre and city beach areas. Sandy Bay was mentioned earlier but it is an isolated area and there have been robberies there recently; its not advisable to go there alone.

Safe? Yes, as long as you stay within the limits of constant security.

I very much agree with @nycman but then the same sentiments can be expressed about visiting Latin America. I’ve met rich Brazilians on vacation in Cape Town who told me how relaxing they found it.
