Has anyone else noticed this? After a certain point, some gym bunnies no longer have flat abs, but develop a still-muscular but protruding stomach. I've especially noticed it in men my age (49) and older.

It has always looked to me like they have over-exercised the area or something, and it had no place left to go but outward.

wow, FOS, a wide variety of thoughts (posts) in the last few minutes from you!.....

this has something to do with bodybuilders taking steroids...."roid gut" it's called....don't know the mechanics behind it, but some dudes love the look....others not so much.....if managed, I think some bodybuilders can avoid the look and still be big....

Personally I am into older men and myself am an avid gym guy. There are a few fellas in my gym with this type physique and I find them incredibly attractive. Although abs can be sexy, if your genetics do not support them, the work to "acquire" them is a hard feat. If I had to guess about these gentlemen in my gym I would guess that they haven't used steroids, but you can never tell. I can always appreciate both a man and a women's body, but sometimes the flawless ripped-to-shreds abs with 3% body fat is not all its cracked up to be. I think on the right guy that little bit of tub can be some sort of .....OH SO SEXY!

A few years ago I was seeing an escort who was doing roids... not to mention selling them. He had a theory on roid gut. He said that it was due to a variety of factors... and possibly partially due to where it was injected as a lot of guys inject the roids directly into the gut. He never did and he did his injecting in front of me on more than one occasion. Still, if you are trying to get big... HGH makes you big all over... and that includes the internal organs located in the gut area. One then needs to compensate with additional ab exercises to counteract the effect. In other words, as far as the abs are concerned it is three steps forward and two steps back... or possibly three or four steps back. Guys today go for size and the gut region responds just as much as other areas if the body. Of course if one over exercises the midsection... or uses weights... it will increase in size without steroid use.

Personally I prefer the classic slim 30 inch waist bodybuilders of the past... It proves that a natural look as in a body built by hard work and not roids is still the most desirable look. Still, as Dane Michaels says, on the right guy the gutsy look can needed be incredibly sexy.

Now regarding Dane, now THAT'S "Oh so sexy!"

Here Here WG, well said! I totally agree with you on the classic body builders from previous era's. It truly is beautiful to work hard to earn something and those men (as well as their bodies) show dedication and relentless work at healthily building their shrine-minus all the performance enhancers, which to me, is kind of creating a false image of die-hard dedication and honest work.

lol, I have on hold some shorts that are size 30. Normally I go for a 31-32, but we'll see how this 30 works.
LOL! Hopefully you will have better luck than I!!! Once upon a time I could make it into a thirty... Something tells me that you still can!!!

Two years ago a friend gave me a jet black pair of size 30 shorts that he had "outgrown". I could barely squeeze into them, but I managed. Plus, they looked hot with a leather harness etc. I did manage to wear them for a while... but eventually they literally... and not figuratively... popped a button!!!

When I've seen this type of build on guys at my gym, it's usually guys who lift tremendously heavy weights but do absolutely no core work. I'm not quite sure why anyone would spend 90-120 minutes exercising and do no core or cardio, but some guys do.

Spot on WG...unfortunately as you mention one has to compensate with additional ab exercises, and there in lies the problem. Few guys are willing to go the extra mile to keep the abs in six pack form. It is a never ending battle. I know guys who work their abs twice a day, never ever drink alcohol and adhere to a strict diet. All well and good if you are pre-contest or for a short period of time, but damn near unrealistic in the real world...

This definitely is called "Rhoid Gut"..but I am sure there can be other reasons that can cause this.

I see that often, specially in older guys.

I think it's either steroids, HGH (Human Growth Hormone) or Hiv. medications, some of them have the effect of creating a massive hard belly, with or without abs on top of it.

Please don't change my words, I'm not saying that all guys with this signs are poz or that poz guys always have this signs in their bellies specially the ones who've been infected recently and have been using new kind of pills.

BVB... I've posted this before... but Nick Harmon had a philosophy: If you eat everyday... you must train your abs everyday. I have not seen him in a couple of years, but when I last did he had the most gorgeous and lickable abs imaginable. I have no idea if he took any steroids, but what ever he was doing he certainly maintained a certain "look"... the classic V look of traditional bodybuilders.

As for myself, based on his advice I do an an routine every day... and even though I maintain a healthy diet and only drink spring water and skim milk it is still indeed a constant, never ending, and at times futile battle. Of course the aging process seems to cause a shift in body mass... and roids or not... I think that factors into the equation as well. In my case it's totally based on age!

lol...I'm right behind you on the ab routine... lol, but it is such a difficult area to work, at this stage of my life it is almost damn near impossible to keep motivated with my abs, cause there ain't no way in hell I'm given up my Gin. ;)

One would think that in this day and age where we have in addition to traditional whole milk... two percent milk, one percent milk, non-fat milk that tastes like two percent milk, regular non-fat milk, skim milk, soy milk, almond milk... that someone would devise a formula for a gin that would have fewer calories... and would still have the taste of gin and the after effects of gin... Something that does not taste like cotton gin... or playing cards... Perhaps someone out there will find a way to grow dietetic juniper berries. It would make for a great investment prospect as I'm sure that BVB is not the only one that has this same dilemma!

I think a lot of guys go crazy with the protein supplements, as well. The body rarely requires more grams of protein then pounds of weight; yet, I have seen guys routinely and for long periods consume 300 GM of protein per day. That is an incredible amount of calories. As time wears on, that level of protein intake just turns to a fat stomach, just like any other calories. For some reason, these protien lovers seem to believe that there is a direct correlation between GM of protein and muscle, which is a theory that is only supported if you have the interval training routine to support the caloric intake.

The first escort I ever hired to top me had this type of build. I'll never forget how perfectly his slightly hairy belly rubbed against my dick when he fucked me.

So I guess it really is out there and there's a variety of causes.

Plus a variety of reactions! :)

I read many of the responses, but I will say that while some of it has to do with steroid use, most I suspect is just a persons lack of desire to continue the ab routine to a point of maintaining a six pack. After 40 years old, and working out for years, many of these guys just are not willing to maintain the strict diet and exercise routine that is needed to have that six pack. It is without a doubt the hardest area of the body to maintain. Just one thin layer of fat can cover up a nice six pack.

Now is it possible to create and maintain a six pack after 40? Well of course. I see it all day long at the gym. There are guys who are well into there 50's and beyond with incredible bodies, so it is possible, just difficult.
