Restaurant in NYC

Hey all,

I always find it funny that this is the first place I think of coming to when I have a question about something, be it technology, tourism or - occasionally even ESCORTS, is this forum. Is that queer, or what!

Anyway, a group of friends and I are heading to NYC for a friend's 40th in October. I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a dinner spot for the celebration. Probably about 10 of us..all gay men around that age (though I look barely 30...no ... really... lol).

If anyone has some suggestions, that would be great. Fine dining would not be high on this guy's list - more about lotsa booze, cute flirty waiters... nice meal... and a spot where a bunch of Loud Canadian Homos would not get themselves into too much trouble.

Time to get started on my list of "to-do's" while I'm there... and I ain't talkin' sight seeing!

Thanks in advance all,

J.

East of Eighth beside the Clearview cinema at Eighth Ave and 23rd Street.

Food is dependably good but will never get 4 stars. It's a mixed crowd but in Chelsea, they're used to celebrating gays. For a crowd that size, you may want to call ahead for a reservation. Depending on the scheduling, the staff can be quite flirty especially if your guests are as hot as you - or one of them recognizes your occupation (which is quite possible). Cuisine is varied and prices are reasonable

Now the Dish at Eighth Ave and 20th Street is probably cheaper and flirtier (lots muscleboys some of whom escort and their clients or clack - including me sometimes) but it's really a Greek dinner on steroids and may not be suitably worthy of a significant birthday celebration. And the Dish may relegate a crowd your size to its upper level which takes away some of the vicious fun of watching the flora and fauna prancing up and down the Eighth Avenue.

If there's a call for a specific cuisine, Italian, Thai, Chinese, just let us Gothamites know.

I love the Dish (especially when Theo waits on me) and eat there maybe three times a week, but agree that it may be a little low-brow for what Josh is looking for. But you get a great view of the avenue from upstairs if you sit at the front, especially if the garage door/wall is up. Rocking Horse across the avenue is a lot more festive, but I'm not sure how well it handles crowds. There's also an interesting paella place on 19th Street between 7th and 8th.

Yeah, it's always fun to watch the college girls trying to walk in high heels while chatting on their cell phones or the nannies pushing babies around in double-wide strollers. :p

Nice!

Thanks guys...great start. I think I will check out the other suggestions of the smaller restaurants as well during my week there.

Any more suggestions welcome - but a big thanks to those that already replied so quickly!

Eat, Drink, and be Merry...

Josh, There are so many good restaurants in NYC that I'm certain wherever you go, you and your friends will have an enjoyable time.

I noticed that most of the restaurants mentioned are in the Chelsea area. They are all good.... If you're looking to move to Midtown, here are some places that I've recently attended parties at and had a wonderful time. They can easily accommodate a party of 10. Most have websites...

Rosie O'Grady's: 52nd St. and 7th Ave

Ted's Montana Grill: 51st St. and 6th Ave

Heartland Brewery: there's one on 51st and 6th Ave

For another meal other than a b'day celebration:

Cafeteria: corner of 17th St. and 7th Ave

Vynl: 51st and 9th Ave

Enjoy your stay in NYC!

The owners of Cafeteria opened a new restaurant, Delicatessen, in SoHo (54 Prince Street). It truly achieves what Cafeteria was trying for: a great dining space and good food. Cafeteria strikes me as a little tired by now; Delicatessen, on the other hand, has a great open-air space and a fun staff with far less attitude.

I highly recommend il Buco, 40 Bond Street.  Excellent food, great atmosphere.  I usually eat at the bar.  Always meet very interesting people.  Bond Street is one of my favorite streets.  The restaurant is just down from Robert Mapplethorpe's and Patti Smith's old place.

Doesn't show a menu online. A few links that indicated menu were blocked as insecure. Just nice pictures and reviews are mixed. I would not be enticed.

Hmmm… I found a sample menu online.  They change the menu fairly often.  Probably not a good fit for you anyway.

Not sure the image of two dirty hippies shooting heroin entices me to spend time at a restaurant.

Well Maplethorpe and Smith were hardly hippies.  How would you know they were dirty?  Pretty presumptuous statement.  Bond Street has gentrified since the Mapplethorpe days, but still has a good feel.  You might feel more comfortable with a restaurant on the UES, or perhaps the new Hudson Yards.

Because I was besties with Jim Carroll. I know more than you do about the scene. So you can take your condescending attitude and shove it.

😂
