While in Brazil utilizing Varig's Brazil airpass (figures to $100 per one city to another destination within Brazil, including connection if necessary), I went to Manaus, Amazonia. Stayed at the Eco-resort Tropical Manaus, probably best hotel there. Rates start around $135. Recommended day tour with Fontur arranged at the hotel p arrival, 70R for a full day tour including Rainforest trek, canoe jungle excursion, meeting of the waters, great lunch. Hotel is about 10 miles from Manaus city center with cab or bus connections possible. Manaus (1.5 million inhabitants) did not offer much. Don't be concerned about arriving at airport late at night, things are still in full-swing even approaching midnight. Taxi ride from airport to Tropical hotel = 36R. Amazon in the vicinity of Manaus appears to be 10 miles wide, making the MIssissippi look like at drainage ditch. Sauna scene at Tropical Manaus non-existent.
