Didn't see anyone talking about this yet here, so thought I'd share some links. This might have been okay in the General Discussion forum, but since it does deal with religion, thought I better put it here. First, the news story:

and his actual blog is:

This is the type of thing that's hard to even fathom or stomach. I guess I'm lucky I came out when I was 19 and didn't have to worry about my parents taking any "parental" action since they pretty much couldn't at that point, but...damn man... What they're doing to him is HORRIBLE. I think the fact that he's blogging it and bringing that much attention to these harmful groups is awesome, however, and I think he's very brave for doing so. He'll be fine I have no doubt... But this type of thing really, really bothers me, and I have to think the experience has to cause emotional scars that will take a long time to heal.

Thanks for posting these links. This information needs wide distribution!

Unfortunately, many religions have used some type of aversion therapy for years. I was raised as a Mormon and they told me that, in order to change, I needed to go through their electro-shock therapy (similar to what was shown in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"). Thank goodness I didn't follow their suggestion. The Mormons didn't stop endorsing this therapy until about 1990.

Now the Mormon Church endorses Evergreen. This is a self-help group and some of their activities include teaching gay men how to play sports and "appropriately" interact with each other. (I'll reserve comment about the fun of the locker room. }()

Another therapy Mormons currently endorse is the use of a penile plethysmograph and self-administered shocks.

In short, you put your Johnson into the machine and they show you gay porno movies. The plethysmograph alarm goes off when you start getting hard and you're supposed to administer a mild shock to yourself. Upon administering the shock, the gay porno movie switches to a hetro movie and you're allowed to get fully hard.

It never ceases to amaze me what is done in the name of religion. x(
