bargain-hunting tip-Manhattan hotel

here's a very pleasant surprise. i frequently stay at the President Best Western hotel (234 w. 48th, between broadway and 8th, 1 block from the gaiety, 212 246-8800). rooms are nice, many recently re-decorated but not luxury-status, many one- or two-room suites available. rates start at $100 to $170 depending on occupancy. no room service but cafe, bar & concession shop downstairs, no vcrs in rooms. (love my laptop with DVD player).

 

recently, I made a reservation for a queen-sized room and when i arrived, they had accidentally sold it. joking that i wanted a penthouse suite, they gave me one. omigod-usually 1,000 a night. entirely different status than the rest of the hotel.

 

two huge rooms on the 16th floor. 40 foot balcony (also service area for hotel building--nyc industrial is the look but i love it; don't be surprised to see maintenance men outside ur living room window from time to time) overlooking 8th avenue and rooftops on one side. smaller balcony with table and chairs off bedroom overlooking broadway (totally private). beautifully-designed 35 or 40 ft. living room with modern appointments, smaller bedroom with dux-type mattress, incredible lighting and modern furnishings, small safe for valuables, and 2 baths. full sliders in both rooms; broadway night view is beautiful. wet bar, small refrigerator and coffee maker, 2 phone lines, fax. full-screen tvs in living room and bedroom, vcr in both and stereo with speakers throughout suite, including bath. 25-30 ft. marble bath with hot tub and sunflower-type shower (feels like ur in the rain forest), bidet.

 

incredible place to feel pampered. just be prepared to pick up ur own food and drink. total privacy. only one smaller connecting suite on the sixteenth floor. (this is very nice too if main penthouse is booked).

 

here's the tip: after 3 in the afternoon if it has not been rented (a frequent occurence), they will let it go for 400 or 500. if u call after 4, front desk is not authorized to book for discounted rate. strictly hit-or-miss proposition here but u can usually book another room. ask for a suite if possible. also, they will allow late checkout for a fee so u can enjoy a longer stay. remember to bring ur videos and CDs--audio/video system worth noting and great view of large flat-screen tv from bed for your favorite porn. note to interested parties: bring ur binoculars; u have a clear view of the sidewalk in front of Stella's (also one block away).

 

staff is accomdating and friendly; look the other way as far as escorts are concerned.
