While watching last night's episode of Queer as Folk, it suddenly struck me that I have a lot in common with the character of Ted.

We both are middle aged (actually I'm just over 50), we grew up listening to the Met Opera broadcasts on Saturdays (I'm an Opera Queen who was familiar with the Mozart aria Ted played), we both find ourselves sexually attracted to much younger guys (I like guys in late 20s/early 30s), and both are very willing to forgive any hot stud if he just smiles back at us (Ted and the hot stud who gave him the bad drugs; me with a guy who took me to the cleaners financially). Last night I constantly felt myself totally understanding and sympathizing with Ted's reactions and it made me a little uncomfortable because I really do not like Ted's character very much. Our big difference...Ted goes to the bars where he knows he will be rejected...I avoid the bars and hire young escorts who fulfill my sexual needs for a hot Young guys.

Just wondering....does any one else see themselves mirrored in the show?

Don't forget about Ted's porn addiction. I'm willing to bet it's just a matter of time before he (or one of the other characters) pays for it.

It wasn't in the Brit series, but they're diverging just enough that it would perfectly in character for him to call a service some lonely evening. They're even setting the character up for it with his ambivalence to the bar scene.

I imagine most middle aged men who hire escorts see a little of themselves in Ted. I also felt that way last night. However, Ted feels much too sorry for himself. No wonder no one wants him, he's has very little self knowledge. I think he's there for us to feel superior to. I'm still having a lot of trouble liking any of the three main characters, Brian especially. I still like

the football player classmate who apparently turns into a fag basher in the next episode. I also like Justin's mom: sorry, but

Michael's mom is just too over the top for me.

I relate best to the JUSTIN character for a number of reasons. 1) I also just recently discovered or should we say allowed myself to experiment with guys. I really like guys now :-)

2) I'm (kinda) afraid that my family might find out that I'm bi-sexual.

3) And I'm new to the whole "gay" seen, but I'm learning quick...

However unlike Justin I'm not "17" and damn I only wish I was that cute!!!

Anyone his age who hasn't spent the last 20 years mostly in the gym can sympathize. He's no longer young, he's no longer young looking, he's no longer pretty.

I sure know what it was like the first time I looked in the mirror and realized the guy doing the fucking had a beer belly! I struggle daily over whether I should color the streaks of silver sneaking into my long brown hair. I just thank my lucky stars my hairline seems to be staying put. ;-)

It will be very interesting if the QAF producers keep the "ted" character and expand him. (In the original, he died from the overdose.) There is much promise in that character. I hope they exploit it.

I can empathize with all of them (even the lesbians!). But I think I most closely identify with Brian. I'm hardly as cold as he is, but of all of the characters, he's the most confident about his sexuality. He has a wild streak that I know I've got in myself. His adventurous nature is a major turn-on to me. Michael is much more likeable (and kissable!), but Brian has no shame about who he is and what he likes. I can relate to that!
