To all you well-traveled guys, I have a few questions and hope I can get some good advice.

I have a few weeks free this coming winter (late January 2001 onwards), and wish to take a few short (5-7 days each) vacations in different spots, some with, some without an escort (but in locations where some good escorts can be found easily).

My knowledge of the US is limited, but would be interested in the following States: NY/NJ area, DC, Florida, California (SF, LA, Palm Springs), Nevada... I like warm weather, but sunburn easily so... beaches may be a problem, but then again, sun screen is always available.

I would like places which offer: nice accomodations (with big king-size beds, a luzury often missing in Europe), with gym, pool or beach, and places of interest to visit either on site or nearby. Night much for night life - if I'm with an escort, like to spend evenings over a nice leisurely dinner, long walk, and then... back into the sack.

Any recommendations on an internet travel agency to give advice?

I'm 50, and no fashion model but normal looking; I'd probably feel out of place in one of these all-gay resorts with porn stars lounging around (do they really exist?). At the same time, I want to feel comfortable both with myself and with any escort with me.

So - HOOBOY, and some of you others with many travel experiences, any suggestions? I'm even open to a cruise.

All places mentioned in your post will have a variety of accomodations and king beds will be readily available assuming you specify when booking.

My favorite warm sunny winter getaways are Miami Beach, San Diego and Hawaii. Hawaii is the most reliable weather, but also by far the most difficult to get to. You can hit cold spells in MB, that are definitely not beach freindly, and SD is definitely warm, not hot.

NYC and DC are extremely unlikely to fit the warm sunny label in the January-March time frame. However, there's a lot more to see and do in both than above.

Escort availability as you can see in the reviews is greatest in NYC, with LA probably second. Miami and San Diego have good availability, just not in the same league as NYC.

Specific hotels don't know your price range, but in Miami Beach I like the Tides but its probably $400 a night this year. In San Diego Loews Coronado($$$) or Hilton San Diego Resort($$) are both excellent. Loews is farther and more difficult if you're going to be hiring local talent(gated, restricted parking etc). There are lots of lower priced places with large rooms available too, closer to downtown or Hillcrest(the gay area).

If you like to gamble, Las Vegas is the place. Top hotels are Venetian, and Bellagio. Venetian rooms are huge - essentially all suites. Haven't been there in Jan-March but would expect sunny days and very cool evenings.

Hi, Adriano --

Winter weather in Los Angeles is usually pleasant, although not warm enough for ocean swimming. The scenery is all in West Hollywood, and the extremely interesting escort bar/restaurant is "Numbers", on Santa Monica Blvd. a few blocks west of La Cienega. You can check in at the Ramada West Hollywood, which is right there and within walking distance of Numbers and places to eat or sit and have coffee. One of the few places in L.A. where you can actually walk and see street life!!! Like all the gym bunnies and would-be actors from the gym across the street. The Ramada certainly won't have a problem with your having guests! Another, somewhat quieter hotel I have stayed at is also nearby; it's called Le Reve. It's on a side street between Santa Monica and Sunset Blvds; you can walk to Numbers or the other places on Santa Monica in five minutes.

San Francisco is likely to be cool and rainy in Jan. - Mar. Think London, only slightly less cold. Las Vegas would be pleasant that time of year (although cold at night) and if you haven't been, it must be seen to be believed. Accommodations at all price ranges. The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association is a group of travel agents; they must have a web site from which you can pick one who can help you make arrangements.

Of course, you can always forsake the USA and consider Brazil (see my world-famous review under the International Escorts section)! Jan. - Mar. will definitely be warm in the Southern Hemisphere! Hope this helps?

Hi Trilingual and Ted,

Thanks to you both for the information. You both have answered along he lines I seek info.

The vacationing will begin in NYC as a kind of home base (as I gravitate to that hub whenever Stateside), and I managed to get a few copies of recent Sunday editions of the NY TIMES, but in the vacation section, all they show are FL and Hawaii. A friend (from NYC) told me that most NYkers travel south (FL and Caribbean) which is the reason no CA vacation packages are mentioned.

I have found some of the gay travel agency sites on the web... managed to check out a few adverts on week-long cruises, but fear I'd have cabin fever unless I had one spectacular escort in tow (one who does not get seasick).

The cool nights are fine with me, and LV sounds good - Palm Springs too, but I guess I have to surf the web for one of those larger hotel.-resorts that has a lot of amenities (eg. decent fitness centre, pool, etc.) on property.

Onoe gets spoiled by Europe... all you need is to get a hotel near the city centre, and most other things are easily in walking distance.

Thanks for the advice: hmmm, Tri... Brazil sounds very interesting, but my Portughese is terrible.

Adriano --

It's true, folks from the East Coast tend to go to Florida or the Caribbean during winter holidays. On the West Coast they go to Vegas, Palm Springs, Southern California or Hawaii.

You probably wouldn't need a car if you stay on the Strip in Vegas; you can walk or take shuttles. Traffic is ghastly, anyway. In Los Angeles you'd need a car, but in the heart of West Hollywood, as previously mentioned, you can actually walk to things, so you wouldn't need to drive all the time. If you haven't already, go to http://www.frontiersweb.com and select the Los Angeles edition. Check out the classifieds for travel agencies, guest houses, and, of course, the very extensive list of escorts! :-)

A car also isn't an absolute necessity in Honolulu. Waikiki is small and very walkable, and there's quite good bus service if you want to go elsewhere in the city, plus a bus that goes all around the island, which is a nice cheap way to see Oahu.

Another pleasant place is New Orleans; in the winter one day can be hot, the next day cool, but it's rarely freezing. The vegetation is subtropical, so that gives you an idea. It's also a city where you really don't need a car, especially if you stay in the French Quarter.

As for Portuguese and Brazil: In Rio you can get by with English, Spanish and Italian. At the baths, of course, the Braille system works just fine! Just touch and feel! :-)

Hawaii!

Hawaii, hard to get to? NO WAY. Continental now has direct flights from Newark and all other airlines have one-stop service either in the midwest or west coast. Yeah, it's a long flight but when you get here, Hawaii is paradise. Not only for our great weather and friendly people but also you can speak the language, drink the water, eat the food, and enjoy first class accommodations. There's a lot to do here. And of course, I'm here ;)

RE: Hawaii!

I grew up in Hawaii.

I still have a home and a condo there.

I go back whenever I can, but I do not have time usually, however, I have to agree with Taylor, there is no finer place on the planet to spend some time.

Whenever I fly in, I see those green, green islands surrounded by that beautiful blue water and I know I coming home. There is no better feeling.

And the food is fantastic!!!!! Write me and I'll tell you the best restaurants, but if you're going on the cheap, stick to Zippys or any dump that sells Saimin.

Aloha nui loa

RE: Hawaii!

Taylor and HooBiy,

Thanks.

I've been to Hawaii once - many years ago. I enjoyed it, but was in a strange kind of tour (major error) and could not see as much as I would have liked.

Oh - one should never travel such distances on the cheap, HooBoy... My Dad always said, "If you can't go first class, then don't go at all...!" Well, he was a banker, and could; I have a more modest job, but decent salary and try to make any vacation comfortable.

Of course, after staying at some 5-star executive suites (on company money of course) ... any other kind of room pales in comparison. However when traveling (and interested in some local action) I go between good 4-star and exceptional 3-star places that have a decent bedroom, and normal amenities.

And the idea of meeting you, Taylor... hmm I may leave the escort at home and just bring the baby oil

RE: Hawaii!

Since I sort of started the Hawaii part, let me state that it is my favorite winter getaway. There are also usually some good package deals-airfare and hotels ONLY, nothing else - available, particularly if you can be flexible with your travel plans. And Taylor is an attraction all by himself, a great body and a nice guy too.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-00 AT 08:31PM (EST)[p]Hawaii - always first choice; however, I just returned from a week in Acapulco. Had a FABULOUS time. Search previous threads for specifics, but let me say it is one of the few places I've been where even the tourists treat each other, regardless of age, race, size, or social status, with a great deal of friendly respect, especially at the gay section of the beach. Didn't notice the typical American judgemental attitude, which was great.

You can get some very nice accomodations at any of the Aston Hotels along the beach in Waikiki. They have some very nice boutique hotels at what I would consider reasonable prices and the most beautiful boys are on that stretch of beach from Diamond Head to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

Of course, if you're going FIRST CLASS like your dad (and me) like to do, then you would stay at the Halekulani or the Sheraton Moana - the old one or the Royal Hawaiian - the Pink Palace. That's on Oahu. Out in the country on Oahu is a fabulous hotel - the Ihilani. But it can be boring.

On the neighbor islands, it really depends on your budget. I prefer the Four Seasons on Maui & the Big Island, any of the Prince Hotels, Ritz Carlton (although on Maui it can be windy). On Lanai, there are two wonderful resorts, but very expensive, however if you go to Molokai, you'll be bored out of your gourd if you like action, but it is great for just being quiet and alone - Hotel Molokai or any of the places there are VERY inexpensive.

All the islands have something special to offer - it just depends on what you like to do. Personally, I like big cities, which is why I'll go to London or Hong Kong to "relax." I love New York City probably most of all, however, I am thinking of moving to London for awhile. People are so much nicer, however their TV sucks and that's a big deal for me.

Rome and Barcelona probably have the most beautiful boys, but I don't speak the languages there. In fact, I don't speak the language in London, either. <ha>

The very best winter getaway for me would be Bangkok. It's always HOT and I love the food, the service, the hotels and most of all the guys! Most of them speak English, but it doesn't really matter. Plus, I can get great tailor made suits there, too.

Log on to Travelocity.com. Tell them which cities in the world you like to travel to and they will email you when the fares rise or fall. You have to act REAL fast when rates fall, but my round trip airfare to London was around $300.

I may have mentioned this before. I have the great good fortune of being able to sleep on airplanes, so it doesn't matter if I'm in the first cabin or the back of the plane. I snap the seat belt on and I fall asleep. In fact, I do the same in my car, which is why you do not want to be a passenger in my car. :-)

Hey, thanks. I'm updating my website with new pics and video clips from my fitness training video so check it out in a few days at http://www.ganero.com. The video was shot a couple of months ago, and I'm even more ripped cause I've been training real hard for my visit to NYC in two weeks. Contact me for more info about Hawaii, my NYC visit or my video at wganero@yahoo.com. Ciao.

RE: Hawaii!

HooBoy,

You should set up a tourist board agency - your advice has been terrific.

I find that my tastes run in the same direction as yours on many things (eg. Barcelona and Rome boys...), and NYC.

I have been scanning the internet now (and Sunday NY Times Travel Section) on Hawaii vacation packages. They are very reasonable for my time frame (25 Jan - 10 Mar). The Cruise trip in Caribbean is harder as most lines are filled for the time I want.

My skin diving escort friend my have to settle for a week on a nice beach with coral reef.

Of course... I may be wiser to seek local talent, saving the extra air fares... we'll see. With the stock market on a dive right now... Damn I hate steerage class, or sitting behind those curtains on a plane :-)

I don't know about the escort scene in Acapulco, but I find it to be one of most dreadful destinations on earth. The beaches are wretched and the only hotel I find acceptible is way out of town, the Acapulco Princess.

There are people all along the streets of Acapulco who I figure go to the "Famous Beggars School" sitting on their blankets with their hands extended asking "por favor". Then there are the ones who have babies on their blankets which I suspect they rent for the day from the "Famous Beggar's School".

Then at at the end of the day, they get in their Cadillac Eldorado's and drive to their villa in the mountains to count their money.

In Mexico, your Peso will be better spent along the Yucatan Peninsula. The water is cleaner and actually better than Hawaii, the people are okay, but you don't run into the dreadful and stink conditions of Acapulco.

I was recently in Cancun, which I do not particularly like unless you are in a very nice hotel. But there is an island off Cancun, Isla Mujeres, which I find not only charming, but a hell of a deal. However, it's quiet and boring, but if you like diving that is the place to go. I would only go there WITH someone.

And the people there are much friendlier than people in Cancun or Cozumel. And I have never had a better Margarita than on Isla Mujeres. (Which by the way, mean Island of Women.) I have only been there with my BF, so I cannot give you any info as to picking up guys, but I would think it would be rare.

Then, there is the Baja Peninsula, below California. Also very pretty, great diving, hot weather but surly people and bars owned by American rock stars. Gag me with a spoon.

A first time visitor to Hawaii - especially if you like to dive, would be wise to book a cruise on the American Hawai Cruise Line. It is the only American-owned cruise line, so they don't have abide by the Jones Act. They only have one ship right now, the Indepence, which is just okay. (I prefer the Crystal Cruise lines, but they have to abide by the Jones act and its very complicated You can't go from American port to American port.) American Hawaii Cruises go to all the major islands (tho, not Molokai nor Lanai), and you can sample every place and not have to unpack everyday. You can book it with a hotel at the beginning or end, the rates are fair, then you can seek out your favorite spot.

The crew is all American and I have been lucky in picking up and sucking up on crew members and passengers alike, but I can sometimes be bold. Crew memebers on almost any line are ready for a good blow job or fuck because they have done everyone in the crew's quarters, so a passenger is a welcome relief to them. You just have to be discreet. :-)

I definately recommend the Na Pali Coastline on Kauai. Captain Zodiacs is my favorite because they utilize Zodiac boats and will take you to places that will take your breath away, plus they take an hour or so to go diving.

The ride back is bumpy -- sit in the back of the boat or do what I do and ride in the front hanging on to a rope and let your knees take take the bounce. It's like a rodeo.

The larger boats out of Kauai can't go to the cool places that the Zodiac's can and the kind of people you are on board with on the larger boats are mostly vomiters with children.

HooBoy,

Your description of the Beggers' School Grads in Aculpulco was funny - painfully so as I have lived on and off in cities in Europe inflicted and infested by that dreadful local tourist scene called... Gypsies... or better... Zingari.

I have also had the misfortune to have had to travel up and down India on business... dreading any time the driver had to stop and then being beseiged by beggers from every corner. No, that is not my idea of a vacation at all.

So I will take your advice (or multible advice) and check out Hawaii, and possibly that Isle of Women (won't attempt the Spanish, but wrote it down). IF I go there, it would definately be with a WONDERFUL escort who is an avid deep sea diver (gee, can you guess who I'm talking about given previous threads???). No matter how boring the hotel would be... I doubt I'd be bored.

And it may be more inexpensive to fly him in to that spot rather than cross ocean, cross country, and cross ocean again.

HooBoy, in case I have not said it already - you are doing a tremendous service with this site.

If you do decide to go to Isla Mujeres (off the Yucatán coast) plan on a side trip to the Mayan ruins on the mainland. Your hotel should be able to arrange a day trip to Chichen-Itza, which is truly spectacular. Even better would be to stay a day or two in Mérida and use it as a base for a day at Chichen and another at Uxmal, which is equally spectacular. It's easy to rent a car and drive, and the roads are fine. There is quite pleasant overnight lodging at both Chichen and Uxmal, if you want to spend a night in the jungle wilderness. Besides, there is (or used to be) quite a dramatic son et lumiére presentation at Uxmal, which makes an overnight there practical. Mérida itself is a very pleasant city. See the colonial main square (cruisy in the afternoons) and the over-lavish mansions of the barons from the era of the sisal boom along Paseo de Montejo. One of the largest is now a museum.

More Acapulco info

Check out this site if you're interested in Acapulco:

http://casacondesa.com/gay.acapulco.directory.htm

As for the local escort scene, I don't know much, but I believe it to be mostly "trade". As recommended on the above site, get friendly with one of the waiters on the beach (they all speak enough English to communicate effectively about dick), then trust his opinion. I hired an American escort to join me for a few days. Local scene is probably risky. I had one relatively bad experience and another wonderful encounter with a local. Neither were expensive.

Hooboy is correct about the beggar, etc. scene being annoying. Of course that's also true of every major American city. I've been to Acapulco several times, so, uncharacteristically, I guess I ignore it. However, I think it's cool that when they're screaming at you, "Hey, Senor, you wanna chica?" You can comfortably reply that you would prefer a chico, and they think nothing of it. In America, you'd risk being murdered.

I stay at Las Brisas, which is honestly one of the main reasons I periodically return to Acapulco. Truly unique. Also check out their website if interested. Price - over $200. / night for a casita with a private pool and breathtaking view.

The post by Hooboy reflects the exact kind of American, gay attitude I was appreciative of not finding in Acapulco. (Hey, Hoo, don't hold back, tell us how you REALLY feel!) However, I'm not being critical. I'm the Queen of Attitude, so I'm definitely being hypocritical here. No e-slaps, please. Also, keep in mind that my reference is to the AMERICAN attitude, NOT Mexican. I was simply impressed with the nonjudgemental way we treat each other down there.

Go for it!

RE: More Acapulco info

No matter where you choose to travel, you might want to check out a couple of web sites that offer discounted rates on hotels:

travelscape.com

hoteldiscounts.com

quikbook.com

They can save you up to 50% on rack room rates. I have saved a fortune using these sites and they frequently have offerings from some of the best hotels, as well as some cheaper ones.

Personally, I think you might want to combine a few days in South Beach, for some interesting restaurants and clubs, and then find yourself the escort of your dreams and go to either a place in the Keys or get a quick flight to the Bahamas. Once there, you can get some nice romance on a deserted beach.

Bon voyage.

Gr8guy,

Thanks for the tips. I have thought of that too: combining some time in FLA with a hop to the Bahamas for sun, snorkling, diving and romance.

The idea of seeking out new talent is appealing, but when one is talking about a few days together... it's better (I think) to try out first for a few hours or one overnight (especially if one or the other is a snorer), and see.

Of course in FL I have some real fantasies: Yuri Breshnev and Alec Martinez (alone or together) and Michael Vincent - any way I can get him...

Guest Professor55 (Guest)

My vote is for Hawaii, and if you want escorts stay around waikiki. There is an escort service there that I have used a dozen times. Called 'Gavin' The rates are resonable and the owner is very reliable and very helpful. There phone number is 808 599 1900. The good service provided make hawaii, my favorite

place for business and vacation. The boys are very local and wholesome and tend to be asia. But if you want something else, just ask. Good luck. The worst place in the world is south florida. West florida, like tampa can be better.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-00 AT 01:59AM (EST)[p]No disrespect to anyone else's recommendations, but stay at the best and forget the rest, I AM the REIGNING Hotel Princess in America.

SUNNY PLACES

Santa Monica: Shutters on the beach http://shuttersonthebeach.com Fireplaces and hot tubs in the VERY well-appointed ocean-view room, 2nd best service in Southern California.

Los Angeles: Hotel Belaire, http://www.hotelbelair.com/ EXTREMELY well-appointed suites with private outdoor patio and hot tub (private enough for outdoor sex with a HOT escort). The BEST service in Southern California.

Santa Barbara (a bit cold this time of year): Bacara Resort and Spa http://bacararesort.com/pages/spa/index.html

World Class Spa, Rooms completely appointed with Frete (spelling) linens, comforters and exquisite robes. VERY exclusive, with one of the most beautiful men in the world working as a valet (though he should be on the cover of GQ magazine every issue, and I have no doubt he someday will) named Ryan. He makes Lukas look homely. AVOID the Four Seasons Biltmore in Santa Barbara.

SoCal acceptable Hotels if the above 3 are booked: Beverly Hills Hotel (most spectacular SoCal Hotel Pool) http://www.beverlyhillshotel.com/ , Casa Del Mar http://hotelcasadelmar.com/

(Most Beautiful Lobby in SoCal, but clueless staff), and the Peninnsula http://www.peninsula.com/hotels/beverly/beverly.html (great restaraunt) or the Beverly Wilshire in a REAL pinch. The penninsula will monogram your pillow cases and Robes.

AVOID: Chateau Marmont, Modrian, Le Meridian, Sofitel, LOWES!!!,

San Francisco: A suite at the Fairmont http://www.fairmont.com

The grandest Lobby in California, with very roomy balconies and nice marble bathtubs.

WARNING!!! in San Fran stay away from Ritz Carlton-too california and the Mandarin (the bath tubs do not have the view they promise, you have to sit UP in the tub to see, and the lobby is VERY dissapointing, but the view is spectacular). If you want a perfect view in San Francisco, the Mark Hopkins Intercontinental http://san-francisco.interconti.com/ has suites with glass solariums on the top their tower on the top of Nob Hill; very nice (but borying lobby).

Hawaii: If you are not obsessed with night life, there is only one place to stay in Hawaii: The Princeville hotel on Hanalei bay. http://www.princeville.com/ No wonder Puff the magic Dragon chose to live here. It is the most beautiful tropical place in the United States and one of the most lush in the entire world. The pool is one of those fun Inifinity pools that seems to spill right into the ocean. And what a view from the hotel rooms! If you get a Suite, your bathtub will be up against the window with a PERFECT unobstructed view of Bali Hai (remember? from South Pacific?). They did right, what the Mandarin in San Fran could NOT figure out (D, if you are reading this I really did appreciate our trip to the Mandarin. It was a nice room with a great view just a dissapointing Lobby and a messed up view from the tub. BUT if you must go to Maui, avoid the Four Seasons; it's the golfiest of hotels. The Ritz Carlton has spectacular service and great views and fantastic POG. Gerards, with the worlds best Creme Brule, is just 20 minutes away.

I was at the Princeville last November and the currently offer wonderfully romantic Champagne dinners on the beach in a small tent. Just you, your dinner mate, your own private server for the evening, delightful food, and the ocean in the sunset. Try to get THAT kind of service at a condo! :-)

If Baja interestes you, consider Las Ventanas http://www.lasventanas.com/ VERY NICE.

I recommend avoiding Palm Springs, but if you must stay there got to the Givenchy Spa and Hotel. Or Two Bunch Palms (From the movie "The Player". Just be sure to eat at Lutese, best sweetbread and Duck Confit you will find in the US.

If you want a break from all the sun, one of my favorite hotels in the world is the Banff Springs Hotel http://www.fairmont.com a true winter wonderland. I go there a couple times a year. BEAUTIFUL. Stunning actually. And one of my favorite spas in the world. LOVE LOVE LOVE Banff.

I hope this helps. I really am the crown PRINCESS of hotels, so if you have any any other questions please do email me at

leandream1@rodhagen.com

Have fun.

-Hagen

p.s. Yes I am an outdoor sport fantatic-Mtn Biking, Rock Climbign, Snow Boarding, Surfing etc-but I am also a bit "Eloise". :-)
