What is 4:20?

I keep seeing this reference in profiles and other text (4:20) and it has been driving me crazy what it means? Can someone explain?

420 is the police code for a marijuana possession violation. It has since gained favor in college campuses across the United States as code for "smoking out." An "alternative" co-op at my home college had a big smoke out daily at 4:20 pm.

 

This all I have only heard about, of course, being the upstanding sort of lad I am.*

 

420 can be used in your AOL profile to lure cute young laid-back college boys. It's like catnip.

 

420 refers to no smokeable drug other than weed.

 

I'd say someone who uses the term 420 is a safe bet to be rather laid-back and fun.

 

 

* Okay, okay, I've downed a bong hit or two (hundred) in my day.

"Smoking out" is general slang for smoking pot.
