Getting naked in gym’s lockers?!

I noticed some guys with low tolerance to accept male nudity in the gym’s locker rooms…
which I personally experienced it few days ago. Noting, that I’m not that type of guys who get fully naked and start walking around in the locker room. Especially when there some other people.
But once after I shower, and if the locker room was less crowded, usually I dnt hesitate to take off the towel, and stay fully naked while getting something to wear.
but recently, and after I took off the towel, and while putting on my underwear, someone came in suddenly to the locker room, and apparently he saw my butt (a part of it), since I was giving him my back.
Apparently, that absurd got offended! And He kept talking to himself until  (I believe) I heard him saying “you Faggot”! You brought it to yourself! “

I got shocked lol, I didn’t even wanted to turn and see who he was.
Does these people still really exist?? 😂😂Encountering such ignorant perception of anti-gay (homophobia), makes me notice that people become narrow minded and shortsighted!

What do you think?

I've never understood the guys that need to have a towel around their waist before taking off the underwear or putting it on.  Especially putting it on.  It seems to me to be so much more simple to pull up the briefs without the obstacle of the towel.

In high school, we showered after PE and most guys grabbed a towel after getting out of the shower, dried off, and dropped it in the laundry cart before walking back to the locker to get dressed.  A few guys would wrap the towels around their waist, but that was the exception.

In my local gym, a lot of guys strut around naked and have no problem with showing off their goods. Many drop dead good looking guys. Some change into their business suits and look like models. It's almost something to look forward to.

“That guy has such a gorgeous ass, I cannot wait to see it hidden in a suit!”
I used to be one who always hid behind the towel, but since turning 55, a steam and hot shower leaves the left nut dangling below the hem, so why bother??? 😛

Being naked in a gym's locker room has NOTHING to do with being gay, so that asshole has really some mental problem.

Having grown up in Italy I always found this puritan concept of nudity in the US quite absurd.

There were a lot of Italians in my  Massachusetts high school. And corn fed Mid West guys in my Army baracks overseas. Nobody even hide their dick and ass under a freaking towel

However, that was in the 1960s before a gay revolution

We had a discussion about this on the Forum a few years ago. (I'm trying to remember if there had been a NYT article on the subject). And I think the gist of it was that there were a lot of younger guys who were very body self-conscious.  I am myself as I'm -well to put it mildly-"portly." I used to hate showering in junior high and high school. I avoided it as much as possible. The only saving grace for me-and for those other people in the gym locker room now-is that I don't go to the gym. Ergo problem is solved. 😉😉😉

Twenty or so years  ago I remember a straight friend telling me that at his new gym a lot of the older gents would have conversations and shave -I think totally naked-but possibly with a towel on. Even 20 years ago we thought that was weird.

I gotta say I find this whole topic bizarre.  I entered high school in 1955 and graduated in 1958.  During those three years I showered every school day at the end of my P.E. class.  We used gang showers and as we exited the shower room the locker room attendant handed each one of us a towel.  We dried off as we went to our lockers where we finished drying off and got dressed.  As we exited the locker-room, we threw the wet towels in a bin.  Nobody thought a thing of it – it was just what we did.  Also in those days men and boy went swimming in the nude at most YMCA’s and nobody thought a thing of it –- it was just what we did.

By the time I retired from teaching high school in 2002 the shower room were “never” used.  After P.E. classes the guy would simply load up on deodorant and proceed through the rest of their school day.  Even following after-school athletic events guys “never” used the showers.  They went home and showered.

Have you ever noticed how many guys refuse to use urinal in public restrooms nowadays, even urinals that are separated by dividers.  Instead they wait for an empty stall.  Seems, to me, like an over developed sense of silly modesty

@Epigonos I think your observations are right on. It goes exactly along with all of mens’ sports uniforms/kits becoming longer in leg and sleeve, more layers, bulkier with less clingy shapes -even the new mens unitard for swimming flattens everything front and back!! While Womenswear for sports is basically a thong and a couple bandages!!
WTF! why are these beautiful bodies hiding under all that clothing? Is it, that as more men are aware of the way they make women uncomfortable with a look, the same men imagine themselves as objects attractive to other men? Part of that is avoidance of even non-sexual nudity, like a public shower. Past high school, it’s perhaps a sign of disturbance to feel threatened about what your nude body looks like in normal non-sexual all-nude situations.  (Obvz this excludes prison inmates…🤐) Guys who feel the “gym shower” is a sexual situation, should either change gyms, or just drop towel and get busy…

That is because he is sexualizing gym shower 😂 it is also very cultural. In Germany people just get naked in mixed sauna. I have seen more pussies in sauna than having sex with women😅

I grew up in a household where people were constantly running around naked… There were three of us children in the house. Relatively close in age, and to keep some order in the house and prevent some little rascal from throwing all the cleaning products into a single bucket while bathing some other naughty monkey, my mom threw all three of us in the tub together. We would wash each other and help each other dry off.

Doors were never closed at my house. Not like a rule but, no need really~ Pretty open about things~  So, I pretty much saw my grandparents, great grandparents, great great grandparents, parents, brother and sister all naked while growing up.

At home: We as children coming of age were eventually allowed some privacy with the bathroom door or sometimes our bedroom door closed. If the door was closed… Everybody got that you needed some kind of privacy for something. There’s only so many things that you can do find a closed door and it’s not like nobody knows what they are… Everybody knows what they are. (Keep reading… this isn’t about how special I am… I’m just building up a point using personal life examples~).

My grandparents had a cabin up in northern Wisconsin… We always skinny-dipped together as kids~ You’re supposed to… you’re up north on a lake~
I used to wake up Somewhere between 4:30 and five in the morning to do chores with my grandfather… We would go down to the fish stump, (where we filleted fish, skinned rabbits and deer, plucked a goose or two at the point, (point of land near the water)~ We would say the Pledge of Allegiance and blast off a Roman candle or two after raising the flag. Then we would get all sweaty doing a bunch of chores which might include shoveling rotten granite on the paths, splitting wood and stacking it up in the log pile or the log cabinet in the cabin.
After that, we’d go skinny-dipping together off the white pier near the point~ My grandpa and I~ that’s how he learned he had a skinny calf and some missing teeth because he and most of his family had diphtheria and polio growing up. All but two of the nine children died. I’m adding that information purposefully to emphasize that there was no focus on her nudity but, and emphasis on being human beings together and family .
Then my grandmother would ring the cowbell and we’d go running up to the cabin for a big “up north woods breakfast”~

All through school PE classes, (all grades thru college), we showered together as a bunch and dropped our towels off in a basket just outside the shower room or a randomly placed towel container. Everybody just ran around naked. Nothing “gay” or pervy about it~

So, I’ve been pretty comfortable being naked… it’s not really been any issue for me being around a couple hundred people who are clothed while I am one of the 10 or 15 other people naked… Or being naked up on a stage in a club or a bar swinging a Boner around.
Not everybody is comfortable with that lack of modesty.
 (Now the important part…)~
I also realize that not everybody grew up in the type of environment I did and for all different sorts of reasons, may feel uncomfortable, disrespected, disrespectful, awkward with that type of casual behavior~
It can be a religious thing, an economic thing, a status thing, a cultural thing, a weight thing, penis size thing, age thing, “the crowd your with at the moment” thing… Not to sound like Mrs Doubtfire here but, Sometimes, it’s just a thing that’s not related to anything else but the individual~ That’s fine… No judgment~ It’s nice that we all do something a little differently~ It also gives us an opportunity to learn from people and grow~
Do what you’re comfortable with… if you want to explore your boi fires and do something out of your comfort zone, find a friend who you can explore with that loves you for the person you are with or without clothing~

Nudity isn’t all about clothing… you can be emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, self-honesty naked~ It’s all good to recognize, respect and explore the boundaries there on any of those levels~

I know you meant "got dressed," but your typo gave me a laugh.  The idea that all of the boys got in drag after showering amused me.

In case anybody hasn't noticed, things have changed.  When I was a kid, men and boys in male-only environments were very relaxed about being nude around each other.  At the YMCA, we swam without suits.  Later in high school, during PE, we also swam without suits.  Men's locker rooms had group showers.   Guys walked around the locker room completely naked without being uptight.

Those days are long gone.  I'm puzzled by just how and when it happened, but sometime, I noticed that guys are no longer comfortable being naked around each other in those situations.  Younger men are so modest that they don't even want to expose themselves for the few seconds it takes to put their undershorts on.  They go through the silly exercise of putting a towel around their waist and pulling their undershorts up underneath the towel.

I think it's weird, but it doesn't bother me, because I don't change in the locker room.  I go to the gym in my workout clothes and leave in workout clothes and shower at home.  It saves about 30 minutes that I can add to my training session.

That's another thing that I have noticed.   Even before COVID, there just weren't a lot of people using the locker room and the showers.  Changing at the gym had become a lot less common.

I suspect one of the reasons for it is helicopter parenting.

I was a late '90s teen, but still felt that as an multi-sport athlete, we used gang showers and weren't uptight about being naked around each other.  These are your teammates...  They're like your brothers.  It's not weird at all.

Like @Tygerscentsaid above, it's also about the family environment you're raised in.  I had two incredibly open-minded parents who encouraged me to just 'be me' and that translated into being super comfortable with my body from a young age.  I was definitely that guy in HS and Uni who never wore a proper shirt.  To this day, it's just what I prefer.

To quote Absolutely Fabulous, some of this newest generation feels a little too PC, flagless, sexless, anodyne and milky white.  Those attitudes definitely extend into apps like Grindr (and further, the bedroom).  For people who were raised with porn-on-demand, it's astonishing that they're so fucking useless and robotic in bed.  Perhaps it's because of.

I always thought putting your underwear on or off in the gym with a towel around one's waist was ridiculous. Also the guys who wore their underwear into and out of the shower and the showers had doors. I guess they were really offended when guys would be nude in the locker room and putting moisturizer all over their bodies after they showered ( 24 hr West Hollywood which is permanently closed). We were just guys trying to stay healthy!

Wearing a towel or being butterball naked in a locker room is the individual’s personal choice, either way.

The OP shouldn’t have been addressed at all for being naked, and those who choose to wear their towels while changing shouldn’t be judged either.

People should focus on themselves and mind their business.

@Tygerscentthank you for sharing your personal journey with us.  It proves that our upbringing has a lot to do with hang-ups which follow us into adulthood.  If someone who grew up sheltered from a prudish kind of family read your story, they would be shocked.  However, it was perfectly natural for you growing up.  Everyone's cultural habits and traditions are different.  No one should judge or criticize.  It's not their business.

It seems that what makes people comfortable or uncomfortable is really a combination of things… There is no equation that accounts for everybody’s sensibility of things. We are all unique individuals despite having some common likes, dislikes, interests etc~

Societal norms, culture, spirituality, genetics, personal experiences, situations and circumstances themselves, (either past, present or future perceived), can all influence how we are feeling and thinking at any given moment. There is no one rule for any one person other than mutual respect, making earnest effort to appreciate and have understanding for each other, (and ourselves), and perhaps even allowing a little patience as we exercise strength in community and compassionate life together~

This all seems to be due to a more acute awareness that homosexuals (and bisexuals) are part of society.

When I was in High School and College ( late 80s/ early 90s) none of us ever covered up. The gym showers were one big room with a lot of nozzles. You got a few view of everyone's junk in the shower, so it was pretty pointless to cover up afterward.  I noticed by the 2000s that increasingly men in the locker rooms would go to great lengths to hide their private parts. Even the bizarre habit of slipping on their underwear while still wearing a towel around their waist. Something I just refuse to do. So strange.

I think a factor in this shift is the sexualization over the past few decades of male bodies in the general culture (not just gay men). Before, say, the eighties, women were judged on their bodies while men were just there. Look at the "matinee idols" and other Adonises prior to that, the focus was all in the face while the body was typically lean but undeveloped. Bodybuilding was seen as vaguely suspect. That changed as mainstream culture became more and more sexualized, porn easily and widely available, and growing awareness by men that they were being judged in the same way they judged women. Our fathers and grandfathers didn't give much thought to their bellies, flat asses and average dicks. Men today, especially younger men, are acutely aware of their (perceived) shortcomings in the way women have always been conscious of their breasts, hips, waist and legs.
