Stella's (NYC)

QUESTION: Considering all the reviews here of guys from the Gaiety, I know that MANY of the readers of this site spend time in NYC. And yet, almost no one mentions Stella's. Are the boys there really so awful? Or are the users of this site so into lily white boys that the men of color at Stella's don't deserve a mention?

 

IDLE CHIT-CHAT: I stopped by Stella's tonight (Thur) thinking the show was at 10pm or so as it had been on a Tuesday night a couple of weeks ago. But on Thur the show is downstairs at 11:30. (Fri & Sat downstairs at midnight.) Somehow the show seemed to be a lot more fun than on Fridays and Saturdays; the dancers were a bit less serious. One guy brought an older gentlemen up on stage and was playing around with him when the chair broke; much hilarity ensued (tho I'm not sure I'd be happy if I found my butt on the floor with some hunky black guy sprawled all over me with a crowd laughing.)

 

I met a cute Brazilian who I think I'll get together with later.

 

I dunno; just seems with all the stories told about Gaiety performers, that there must be almost as much to be said about some of the boys at Stella's?

 

Am I the only one here who goes there? The only one who's ever gone with anyone from this sleezy dive?

I doubt it. I've gone there plenty. The guys are cheaper than *escorts* but less reliable too and probably better for quickies. I met one really hot white guy there. And some of the men of color are very sexy, though many are from a culture that's more interested in getting as much money for as little in exchange as possible (I'm not saying all or even most). Also sometimes there is a language barrier. You're dead on about the shows -- those on the weekend are crowded and hard core in a way I find off putting. Thursday can be a lot more fun. I prefer bars, I can see and chat with them, they can see and chat with me, and I can try to read vibes. But I tend to feel that unless you're really into -- I don't say sleeze but perhaps grunge might do -- Stella's has limits that are reached pretty quickly.

But as I'm not into over-sterioded, dwarf, white, Chelsea boy clones (which is 95% of the Gaiety), I go to Stellas. Avoiding the dancers, whom I quickly learned had that annoying straight gene stated previously, I've found a lot of hot men, who can definitely perform, upstairs around the bar. There's a hell of lot more variety at Stellas, and at least these guys are taller than 5'8". If you want muscled-out hobbits, go to the Gaiety; if you want tall, wild, handsome, built blacks or latinos, choose Stellas.

PS. Friends dragged me out to the Gaiety last Sat. night for the first time in a long time, and it was as predictable as I remembered. I was waiting for the guys to break out into "Follow the yellow brick road." Thank god for the Whisky Bar.

Ah, Stella's, my home away from home when I am in the city. I wouldn't think of going to NYC without at least a short visit to Stella's. I am one of the oldies who remembers Round's, Show Palace, Follies Unicorn, and unfortunately there are no other bars I know of where you can meet and connect with a handsome young guy. The Gaiety type, in my opinion, tends to want to do the least possible to get the most possible. Yes, they are beautiful for the most part, but licking someone's abs for $250 is not my idea of a hot time. I really like the guys who hang out at Stella's and have hooked up with MANY of them. Latino Fan Club stars occasionally, but I've also met hot and beautiful exotic guys from Argentina, France, Brazil, Czech Republic, etc. The men are easy to approach and most are very down-to-earth. I don't really like the strip show in the lower level on Saturday nights, as it gets VERY crowded and it's hard to see anything if you are not a Wilt Chamberlain. The staff is very friendly, too, possibly the most friendly I have ever met in NYC. The location is good, in the heart of the theatre district near 8th Avenue. Although Stella's isn't for everyone, I feel it offers a very enjoyable time and a plethora of hot, hunky guys to drool over. Many of the guys have become repeats for me. I was in Stella's last Saturday night and spotted a handsome guy who I wanted to meet but, unfortunately, had plans a little later so I would have to wait and return to meet a hottie. When I did return, the "man of my dreams" was gone. I wish I had set something up before I left but didn't. I know, I know, you snooze, you lose. Anyway, I consoled myself by meeting Tommy (review to come later). I have never been disappointed with Stella's. If you like muscle guys, twinks, ethnic hunks, student type, you will find him there. Trust me. And enjoy!

Geez, I never ever thought I'd become an apologist for the Gaiety, especially since I agree that probably 80% of the dancers there suck (or don't, as the case may be). But not every time I walk out my front door to visit the Gaiety am I looking to buy a boy, thank you very much. I go most often because I enjoy seeing a hot man strip. If we're run by our libidos, we're going to make some awfully bad decisions. It's our responsibility as the consumers to do some Betty Furness work and get the lowdown before we part with our hard earned dollars. I'm not with unlimited funds here. I made one bad purchase at the Gaiety and never again! I've checked things out thoroughly before I added to any dancer's retirement fund. My major reason for going to the Gaiety is to see the hot dancers nude, not to lick their abs for any amount of money. As far as Stella's goes, the two times I've attended shows there, it was so crowded I couldn't see anything. I have, upstairs, done both the purchasing thing as well as the free stuff to great satisfaction. But as far as the dancing goes, I'd much rather see a hot, ripped, muscle dude in a comfortable, smokeless, non-drunken milieu.

Only if you let them. I called Kirk's (Voltaire) number last weekend and his brother Darren came over. He said he was filling in for Kirk. Pretty hot, but not my type exactly. We chatted for about 15 or 20 minutes - nice guy - and I gave him a ten spot for cab fare because he was pretty fucking amusing.

 

And there have been plenty of guys I've taken home from Stellas, where they can't get it up or won't kiss after they said they would. They're right out the door with nothing (and I've never had anyone hassle with that). You add to their retirement fund only if you let them scam you.

 

Always, repeat always, be run by your libido. It won't last forever.

I went to Stella's a few times last time I was in NYC (1998.) I was told I'd prefer it to the Gaiety as I tend to prefer black and Latino guys... and it was definitely the case! However, the downside was that apparently they're not allowed to get completely naked due to the fact that they serve alcohol there.

 

One night I was there I sat next to the booth where the host/DJ sits-- he turned out to be one of the hottest performers... and he let me play with him a few times while he was changing! Yum!

 

Now... how about Escuelita's? I know they always talk about that place in "Black Inches" magazine... anyone been there?

Gaiety is fun, but the reviews I've read here have put me off form renting out of that venue/milieu/tableau/joint. AOL chatrooms, websites and, above all, this venerable site have resulted some GREAT times. But to Stellas...

 

Great stuff, Stellas! It's a bit on the soft underbelly side, especially downstairs where it makes the rather seedy Escuelita's look like a Grand Central Station. (I was actually FRISKED the only time I went to Escuelita's, tho they declined my offer of a body cavity search.) But upstairs is a lot of fun, with friendly/sexy staff (Tony and Juan...!!) (OK, Juan has a BF, but one can dream). If you've ever been to the old QT on Polk street, it's about two notches above that interesting dive (Rest in Peace, Warren), but with the same mix of characters. Older men looking for some rental fun, young guys looking for some income and an interesting batch of "in-betweens" who can keep you guessing.

 

Most of the boys are Latino and black there, with a few exceptions to keep the mix alive. Of my three "takehomes" so far, two were deluxe (Juan from Columbia and Roberto from Brazil)and the third was sweet but on the wrong career path. None were a hassle. Rates are 100-120 typically. The promise of a further tip if things go well seems to provide motivation. too. Compared to the ever-increasing "escort" rates from the Next Magazine crowd ($220+ now), some of Stella's-boys are a very good deal indeed.

 

AND, even if you don't need a "session" or just don't find anyone to click with, the time spent there is NEVER boring.

Have met some other clients there and it's great fun to compare notes.

I was at Esquelita once and was frisked as well, but we had to go downstairs, as it was late and I guess the upstairs is off limits after a certain time. There used to be a bar called King on 6th Ave (maybe 7th?) around 17th or so. Gone now. They used to have go-go boys, and some of the boys I could swear had also been at Stella's but I never thought of it as a hustler bar. (But then I can be dense about these things.) Gone now. Don't know if that was the establishment you were referring to.

 

BTW, somebody told me that Stella's was closed last Thursday (10/8) due to demolition across the street, but I guess its back open now.
