Least Favorite City to Work

Out of curiosity, which cities are your least and most favorite to work?

Top 3, Top 5, Top 10? I'll start with 3 and a brief reason:

Least favorite:

Kansas City (and Kansas/Missouri as a whole. Some potential but majority of inquiries contact sporadically and on short notice.)

Los Angeles (overly saturated, disproportionate low amount of inquires for the size of market.)

Florida (lots of potential, but fails to sustain consistently. Also overly saturated in the big cities).

Most favorite:

Believe it or not, I don't have a favorite. As in: I don't favor one market or city over another. What makes a place favorite, is going there, and then not having to keep going back over and over and wearing it out.

I like to go to cities, and then not go there again for a few months. Sometimes I don't want to see the same climate or trees over and over. I may do Michigan and then Phoenix. Switch it back up, go to Texas before Florida and after that DC and back to Denver right before Seattle. Finish it up with a run to San Francisco 😄

Granted: it's not as easy as it sounds. Also I don't do much air travel so, some of these extended trips can carry on for a month or two.

My least favorite is a tie between San Diego & Los Angeles.

Yeah I’ll add San Diego to that as well. It is very flakey there, and I get a vibe of intolerance and snobbery. Reminds me of Tampa in Florida and San Antonio in Texas. Also would be on a list of least favorites.

I thought you were going to say NY in the sense that it would be even more saturated than LA? Or at least I would've thought that.

Hmm, I’ve actually never worked in NYC…for the reason you stated. It just hasn’t yet compelled me yet to want to make the visit.

However, NYC is more of an epicenter for hiring than LA is. It’s hub as an international and especially European gateway and diversity, along with tons of single, densely metropolitan and wealthy gives it an opportune edge that LA doesn’t quite have.

Also, LA is geared towards a “type” (think Andrew Christian models), whereas New York has a wider view of tastes.

As a long time New Yorker , I will agree that we do have a wider variety of tastes . I remember when the Abercrombie boys = beauty , (in much of america actually )  funny how that changed. Even in that era when beauty was so singularly defined so widely , in New York what passed as hot was way more varied . There was just so much to choose from , and speaking for myself I found beauty in all shapes and colors , and was open to experimenting .

Sad to see San Diego is not a great market anymore for providers or clients. I was stationed there for several years during the early ’00s when I was in the military and it was awesome. I still go there regularly for work and trying to hire just sucks these days

What is your reasoning behind choosing LA?

Disclaimer: I'm only speaking from my experience, LA could be someone else's favorite place to work, and my favorite city could be someone else's least favorite. I chose LA as my least favorite because  there are cons in the business like any other business, but in my experience, the cons are much more prevalent in LA in comparison to the other cities I've worked in. Business is great in LA, and the weather is beautiful, and some of my best clients I've met in LA, but I have encountered more unstable people (literal crazies) than in any other city. There is an expression that LA is the land of fruits and nuts, and I totally see what they mean. Also, LA is kind of known for having a lot of flakes just in general, so it was working in LA that taught me that I had to learn how to screen out those people within the first 1 or 2 messages in order to avoid them. With that being said, I just don't have to filter out as many people in other cities, whether its New York, London, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, Palm Springs, Seattle, Utah, or Sydney, Australia.

I think this comes from a culture of beauty being disposable in LA especially . But San Diego ? I wonder it this is a Southern California thing because I have not yet seen San Francisco mentioned .

I am very much a so cal person - even though I live on the east coast

Favorite: NYC. The "push and shove" of dealing with clients there always kept me on my toes as a professional. And I never took it personally.

New York city is no joke. We can be mean son of bitches, with no apologies. I offered to actually coach a UK based provider on what to do ( i.e how much to charge, how it works here - its a little different compared to the UK and EU). I have no interest in hiring him anymore - just wanted to do something nice for someone I thought needed some help.

But as the saying goes, "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere"

Based on when you say “early 2000s”, I bet it’s due to the hookup app-effect that has affected many cities as well as the escort industry.

You know I never even thought about the app culture. I always attributed it to the repeal of DOMA /DADT. A lot of us were closeted in the military at that time because we had to be and therefore we turned to escort sites for companionship. After it was over we were free to go to clubs and pursue guys openly without the fear of reprisals. But really bring up an excellent point about hook up apps.

Least favorite: Orlando. Dull as dirt.

2nd place, least favorite: Boston. Not much receptive to outside (and outsider) thinking.

Favorite: NYC. The "push and shove" of dealing with clients there always kept me on my toes as a professional. And I never took it personally.

Oh yeah, add Orlando right to that list. lol But why do you say dull as dirt? I learned myself, despite being from Florida: that Orlando is not the genuine Florida experience. At least not from a “Kokomo” beach boys perception lol. It presents as very fake, and overly hustle and bustle while still trying to exude a “vacation” destination. On my last visit I met a couple of decent clients, but when I lived there, many of the clients were jerks and regularly not just flaked, but intentionally time waste. I’d also experience weeks of dry spells. I often had to advertise in other smaller towns in Florida (and drive to them) to make ends. I was so glad to be leaving out of there.

I even had one trying to sell me this dream of working for one of the resorts, all the while he was just trying to find a way into a relationship with me. I’m like dude, are you going to be my client or my career coach?

However, after living in Kansas City, I’ve come to realize there’s always “worse”. Kansas City and many parts of the middle-Midwest: that’s dull as dirt lol. And now it’s Fall, everything just going to be cloudy, brown and cold until April 1st. And these guys are so g’damn judgmental and phony. I’m almost considering moving to (southwest) Florida or Arizona/some desert place out west for the duration of the winter.

Orlando also has a lack of character and culture.

It's where people go to forget they're still actually people.

That’s what the 🐭 wants 😆

that’s also one of the things that bugged me about Orlando. Despite “gay Disney” and various spots for gays, and even a large gay scene: it was just so family and kid oriented. I once had to yell at a group of kids who stormed the hotel elevator. 30 people cannot fit on this thing, step the f**k back!

Whenever I tried to date someone there, it was always about them meeting their family and going to theme parks. The gays played “straight” family guys during the day, whores at night. I hated it.

It was also a very hard place to meet real people. Everybody was just as fictitious as a Disney script.

That’s shocking! However I must say, many places have grown and changed over the last 20 years. Not that I’ve been in the game that long, but I know that things are different in cities now versus 2010. Southern California and L.A. IS however not a stranger to racism.
