Hello. I’m thinking of a travel to either of these cities in January or February 2022. I this is my first time traveling to Brazil so I’ll like some inside in which city is more gay friendly and I’d have a better time in. What are some hotel recommendations and places to see and do.

Which city to recommend depends on your age and likes and dislikes.

I assume you are asking about Brazil because you know that prostitution is open and it is not illegal there.

Moreover, in Brazil, the rent-boys are handsome and friendly and inexpensive.

Rio tends more for younger visitors who like the beaches and partying (and the rent-boys).  Of course, older clients are also welcome and visit there often.

There are thousands of rent-boys available in Rio and Sao Paulo.

Rio has two popular rent-boy saunas (Clube 117 and Clube 202).

There is much to see and do in Rio.

Sao Paulo is for the somewhat older visitor and who wants to see a bit of culture.  But, you will also see many younger visitors in Sao Paulo.

Sao Paulo has more than fifty museums, some of which are rather nice.

At the moment there is only one working sauna with rent-boys (Espaco Lagoa)

Here is a link to a Brazilian site that sells all types of merchandise and services.  Included in the services are actual ads from Brazilian rent-boys.  In order to see the photos and ads of the rent-boys, scroll down on the site and click on "Acompanhantes masculinos then choose the city, such as Rio or Sao Paulo.  There you will see many ads from rent-boys along with countless photos of them.

Enjoy the site and enjoy Brazil if you go there.

Thank you for all that info.

I’m in my mid 20s. I don’t care much for the night life scene. I am more attracted  to sightseeing, culture and of course, the men. Do you have any resort recommendations? And also advise for solo travelers?

Considering you are young, you should not have a problem meeting men unless you are unattractive or difficult.

It is rare to see a middle twenties client in the rent-boy saunas.

If you are not looking for rent-boys, there are many gay saunas where you could go and meet guys without paying.

However, if you like the masculine type and/or married guys who go to the saunas to make money as their main job, you would have zero effort meeting such a type of guy at the rent-men saunas provided you reached an agreement on the price for the encounter.

Culture in Sao Paulo is more plentiful than in Rio.

There is a very nice museum on the main "high end" street in Sao Paulo (Avenida Paulista) MASP.

They often have on loan excellent works from famous museums all over the world.

There are other museums in the city.

Several years back, the museum D'Orsay in Paris was remodeled.  The museum had to find a safe place for its art treasures.  Incredibly, millions of dollars of artwork was sent to Sao Paulo and to Rio "on loan" for safe keeping.

Below is a link to a video that was made of those excellent art works that were loaned to Rio and Sao Paulo, despite Brazil's reputation for be an open place for prostitution.  You see, Brazil has a lot of culture and, of course, a lot of handsome men for rent.

One more thing about MASP (Museum of Art, Sao Paulo).  Across the street from the museum is a large park.  It is called Trionon.   Do not go there at night because it is dangerous with muggers.

If you go there during the day, you will find many rent-men (garotos).  They sometimes approach lone men but often just sit on a bench waiting for someone to talk with them and make a deal to make some money.

The park during the day is safe.  Just before the entrance will be parked several police cars.  The police, when not in their car, walk around in the park to make the park safe.

As I wrote earlier, prostitution in Brazil is not illegal.  Therefore, if you are talking with a rent-men in the park and a policeman walks by, do not be concerned.  The police and the rent-men know what is happening and can do nothing because no law is being broken for trying to score in the park.

Good luck if you make it to Brazil.

Lastly, the above video is not from MASP.  The paintings were on display at two large banks in Rio and Sao Paulo.

Both cities are equally gay friendly. I would go to Rio if you only have one week, and wouldn’t go to an hotel but to an airbnb.

I think I’ll go to Rio for sure. I’m thinking I’m staying in a resort. I think I’ll be more comfortable in a resort than in an Airbnb.

Of course, it depends on how you enjoy traveling. I prefer to navigate the city and its surroundings and mingle with the locals in places that are not always taken over by tourists. And of course visiting the saunas and serial fucking the guys I like. Nothing like an airbnb for that.

When looking for hotels in Rio, should I book something in Copacabana?

I thought you were looking for a "resort" as you wrote in your previous post.

There are no resorts in Rio.  There are two high-end hotels that one might consider to be resorts because of their high cost and amenities.

You might want to consider Ipanema where things are a little more modern.

One fancy hotel is close to being a resort but not quite:

Hotel or resort. I’m fine with either or. I said resort thinking that there would be plenty since Rio is next to the ocean. I just want to be in a centric location with easy access to many attractions.

My two cents: definitely stay in Ipanema or Leblon for the beach, restaurants and some shopping.

If you want more serious retail therapy, head for Barra Shopping in Barra da Tijuca (upmarket suburb to the West), about 20-30 minute taxi ride from Leblon.

I’d avoid Copacabana, especially at night and if you are on your own.

Completely agree about Ipanema, although my shopping experience was kind of many music CD can I buy and who is performing in small Ipanema clubs (Copacabana has amazing Brazilian music as well)

What about the city of Brasilia - haven't been there in decades

Several of us like the JW Marriott best. It's a 4.5 star high rise with roof pool and huge lounge open to most. The lounge is 2 stories and has a full view of the ocean plus free breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. In the lounge you realize the hotel is basically American and European business travelers. There's an excellent restaurant on main floor. I got gov't rate (they don't check) for $92/night. It's the same feel as a top big hotel in a big US city. That's rare in Rio.

It's right across from the beach at the end of Copacabana where Ipanema begins, a great location. Downtown Copacabana and Club 202 are easily walkable. 117 is a decent Uber ride. I like 117 best but the immediate area to it is not for tourists. However it's close to Sugarloaf Mt which has some very fancy condos at it's base and I believe there's a hotel or two across the highway from it. Sorry I forget those neighborhood names. An alternative I've stayed at is the Sheraton Grand Resort just past Leblon where the beach curves. It's an elegant high-rise in a park-like beach setting with amazing views, rooms and food and a decent Uber ride in. Very fortress-like safe. Price out Uber to 117 to see how feasible that ride is. Copa isn't far at all. Basically the JW Marriott is a fine high-class city business hotel on a beach while the Sheraton is more fancy beach resort. The other "resorts" are way way past Leblon in Barra di Tijuca and probably infeasible as you'd spend most of your trip in an Uber.

Especially if American, I wouldn't try any "ok, borderline good" areas. I have friends who've been robbed every single business trip there downtown.  And Copacabana north of the Marriott is bad.

To all Brazilophiles,

How much Portuguese do you know? If your Portuguese is (very) limited, are you still able to get by?  How do you work things out with sauna guys & escorts with limited language capability?

I've always wanted to visit Brazil, but my pronunciation of Portuguese is hopeless.  I'm afraid that even if I made an effort to learn the language (which is notoriously difficult), Brazilians wouldn't understand me because of my awful pronunciation.
