Four years ago seems like an eternity, but back then I and many others went down memory lane in regards to movie houses that showed adult films. There's a entertaining recent story on the last one standing in Los Angeles. My strangest memory was a long time XXX Theatre was converted into a family G rated films only theatre in a town I used to live in. That didn't go over very well, due to the prior history and all.

Inevitable.

Boomers, I guess, will be the last generation to have experienced the thrill of movie house gay porn.
Visceral connections, not virtual.

Right. Thanks to technology and living in a more accepting society, younger gays don't need to go to those places (in secret) to connect with other gays. Grindr delivers at your house faster than Domino's and for free. Why bother going to a (dirty) theater to spend money?

Adventure, serendipity, and spontaneity. If people felt shame going to such places, they wouldn't mourn the loss. Most guys (yes, even the hot ones) are missing out on real connections and most of the time just end up jerking off and putting their phone down before meeting anyone. I also personally like to know if someone is a crackhead before they arrive at my door. The good news is cruising is making a massive comeback as a result of people being tired of being cooped up. It's just shame a lot of these places couldn't stay in the game long enough to see it.

Mourning the loss of XXX theaters has nothing to do with whether people went there in secret (which is what I said, not that people were ashamed about going there).

I understand your sense of nostalgia about porn theaters and cruising. But I don't think you're right about how the world works for younger gays (which is the demographic I was talking about). Perhaps older people might find it harder to connect in person as theaters disappear and cruising dies down. The gays tend to be ageist after all.

But younger gays  who choose not to meet up are not doing it for lack of opportunities... or because they somehow evolved to prefer cumming on their iPhone screens... They do plenty of meeting up if and when they want to. And technology gives them the opportunity to be selective upfront. So they simply have no need to go down to the theater or to the public toilets to pick from whoever happens to be there, all of whom might be crackheads for all you know.

Literally every young guy I've met in the last 3 years or so has bemoaned how flakey guys are in NYC on Grindr, without exception. So, it's not my imagination or my old age (I'm 35). Maybe it's different in Kansas. As for drug use, I'd prefer to get a read on someone's face in a bar, sex club, cruising spot, than once I opened my door after they've made the journey.

Why bother going out for Chinese? Anyone can make it at home, ingredients all delivered from Whole Foods.

Why bother going to a bar? Costco delivers booze AND glasses. AND ice.

We bothered to go to the only place with moving pictures of men doing all the sex things, because it’s what we wanted. It’s what was available. Straight men had it for generations, and though mostly straight, they would watch cooter porn, and gladly retreat to a corner with another guy who wanted to blow him.
Technology is just the means. Motivation is on us.
(Sorry you missed out on the fun)

That's exactly what I said. Now, younger people have other ways to hook up available, so they generally don't go to those theaters. And I'm sure that affects their viability. I didn't generalize about why all gays are or are not going to the theaters, and I didn't say whether I ever went.

(Sorry you're weirdly making this about me).
