I think the "detached" part is partly because he has family back in Ukraine that he is quite worried about. Also, Eastern Europeans (in general) tend to look somewhat unfriendly until you get to know them. At least that has been my experience, as we have a lot of Ukrainian and Russian guys at my gym.
