I just turned 37 and feel like gay porn from 2000's (early and mid 2000's especially) was better compared to the one we see today. Not sure if the fact that I was discovering my sexuality back then plays a role, or perhaps I'm also getting this impression because the movies were just less accessible in those years? Thoughts please.

I'm also 37. Men's grooming and body styles change with time. Look at the mustaches and perms from the 70s porn! Today, porn stars are covered in tattoos which are mostly not attractive to me. I definitely dig the grooming and body styles from the 2000s. There's other aspects, too; like directing styles and what makes money differently as technology changes. But I'm more turned on by the body types and grooming styles predominant in the 00's.

What's good about porn from the late 1980s and early 1990s for me: Generally clean shaven and no tattoos and a lot of good looking men. What's bad: Most sex seems scripted/highly directed.

 

What's good about porn today, particularly if we are talking about performer released porn on Fan websites: More passion/genuine sexual chemistry. What's bad: Production values (not always, but sometimes bad lighting and camera angles); too many tattoos; since everyone can make porn if he wants, there are a lot more performers who look downright unattractive as far as I am concerned.

 

I don't think I have any specific porn memories of the early 2000s, but I'd say it had a lot more in common with the 1980s than today.

 

If forced to choose an era, I would definitely choose more recent porn because at least I can find a lot of hot scenes after I weed out the guys who look ugly to me. A lot of old porn is just boring. I can just imagine being a hot guy paired with another hot guy but then some unattractive director is interrupting the sex repeatedly to adjust positions, camera angles, etc. That completely ruins the flow of porn most of the time.

Exactly porno beauty was more traditional stardom in porno has been redefined. A beard was unthinkable, otters inexistent or waxed. I think Raging Stallion and also Titanmen started changing it. The Falcon look as it was called back then might still reign but doesn't dominate.

I guess I see all sides. As some one who came of age in the 80s there have certainly been many changes over the years. I've always had a thing for vintage porn (like 60s and 70s). I agree that it's fun to have so much variety and so many niches catered to today. I personally don't mind tattoos so much unless they're facial. For me a handsome/cute face is one of the most important things. I also appreciate that you can create a high resolution video with very basic equipment these days. Gee willakers, kids! My first exposure to gay porn was in a theatre in SFO in the late 70’s. The acting was non-existent, the lighting and photography (16mm) pretty poor, and the men were every kind- twink to jock to daddy. The action ranged from boring meh to crazy hot, and featured a lot of outdoor action shot on Fire Island. It was the sex education film I needed to come out. I converted a rented VHS copy of it years later into digital and still have it... Its real appeal is from the associated memory of the rush of it being my first time with all of it, and the cruisy setting of where I saw it. The stuff from that time and early 80’s was all grittier, and it became more scripted, staged and polished as videotape provided more detail, better color and lengthier format. The men became smoother, prettier, but often less engaged in the scene, with wider use of stunt dicks for closeups, as this was all pre- Viagra.

I think you’re right in the 70’s there were very few companies but they did everything.

Old school....wow I'd thought I never see the day 2000 is considered old school...but I love all of it. Each decade has a fad to it.
