While our stay-at-home orders are certainly saving some lives, there are also some negative consequences of course. Lots of jobs and money lost, for example. Also, many patients are avoiding needed medical attention. Especially on a hot day like today, I would have been getting my exercise at the gym, but, with the gym closed, I've been hiking the trails in the hills of the area. Today I almost stepped on a rattlesnake. That would have made me a Covid-19 victim, albeit an indirect one...

You best be careful Unicorn. I'm glad you dodged the bullet. In which state did this occur?

The SF Bay Area (East Bay). I'll probably be moving to southern California in the Winter, and was dismayed to see that, unlike the C. oreganus venom from the snakes that we get in northern California, the bit of the snake prevalent in southern California, C. helleri, can be fatal!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotalus_helleri

"Crotalus helleri has a highly toxic venom that is much like Mojave toxin in the way it attacks nerve endings. It also contains myotoxins (toxic to body muscles) and hemotoxins (toxic to the blood), so it can easily give a fatal bite. The venom from this snake also requires a much higher dose of Crotalidae polyvalent immune fab ("Crofab"), an antivenom used to treat the bite of North American pit vipers, than the venoms of other rattlesnakes."

I meant to have this string in the general forum, but was hanging around the Gallery when I posted it, so it went to the possibly wrong forum...
