My thoughts are it’s never expected, but appreciated. After all, you paying for the service is already pretty expensive. I myself usually stuck with 20% and more so if I’ve had a remarkable time with the provider. I’m just generous I guess ?.

What are everyone’s thoughts on tipping? I assumed it was the same format as with restaurants— 15% base, 20% if you really enjoyed it.

thanks !

I'll just add that masseurs in spas get 30% of what we pay. Our tips are important to them. On a $60 massage, I tip $40 if it was OK. If it was very good, I tip $60 .. And I don't consider myself all THAT generous.

"Private" masseurs are something else. Many don't tip, including me. Their stated price is it, and it's high enough. If some 21 year-old kid is just starting out, and charges $100, I'll usually give him $20 extra the first time.

Thanks, @KeepItReal for posting the links. This subject of tipping has been brought up and run into the ground many times in this forum. Those links are full of feedback.

Technically, it is not considered proper etiquette to tip the owner of a business. Any business. If the guy is setting his own rate he should set it at the amount he wants to make for the service he has claimed to provide.

Correct! When you give extra to a business owner it is not called a tip - it is called a bonus!

I have a restaurant owner in my neighborhood that opens by himself early morning and always stand ready to serve me breakfast. I insist on tipping...I mean...bonusing him! ?

I am afraid some rules of etiquette was set, and is stuck, in the era when ladies wore corsets. I mean, just read Jane Austen!! ?

There is a wide spectrum of what people consider are reasonable tipping practices. I am, it appears, at one end of the spectrum; I routinely tip 30% or more to a sole proprietor; especially, when the occasion warrants it. Since I tend to see the same guys over time, I appreciate that they are happy to see me and willing to accommodate my schedule and interests. In some spa instances, I have tipped anywhere from 75 to 100%. I tend to like the guys I see regularly and I am generous to friends.

Tips at spas

I agree with @beethoven that tipping at spas is very important. The spa takes a big cut. The masseurs are working for tips. I try to tip cash directly (and discreetly) to the employee. At a spa in the US, I tip $50 - $100 for a massage even if I'm unhappy with the service. It's a moral obligation, like tipping a waiter (in the US). Whatever the business charges you, the person taking care of you is working for tips. If you don't tip, you're stealing.

Tipping independent masseurs

These guys set their own prices and keep the full amount. I tip for service or when I think the masseur has set his rates too low.

You are a generous person. I like your strategy. I pretty much do the same.

Don't kid yourself . . . The owner of a business expects tips just the same. When my hair stylist used to cut my hair as the owner, I gave him a tip for a job well done and since he has sold the business and rents a chair in another shop, I tip him just the same. I don't want a bad haircut and he aims to please me. I dont have that much on top so cannot afford a slip of the clipper. Could you imagine not tipping the guy who trims your pubes? Next time around, you could be missing one of your jewels!!

I’ll add this to the mix in regards to tipping at spas. If you’re paying with a card, if you can, bring the tip in cash. They have to wait at least two weeks to get that money if the tip is left on your card. And as I’m sure you can imagine, getting the money immediately is probably really helpful to the masseur.

  • 7 months later...

I recently went to a legit Chinese massage place that I frequent and have been to probably 10 times over the past 2 years. The massage is $90 for 90 minutes. I usually tip 20% so a $20 Tip. This last time however, It began to get obviously erotic in nature and the masseur asked if I wanted to go for another 30 minutes. I said yes and then got 2 HE. Because of the added time, the price was $115. I tipped him $45 and at the time I felt that was fine. But over the past few days, Ive been thinking that it was too little. I don't want to have offended the man. Do you think this was enough?

Speaking only for myself - if I received a solid massage for 90 minutes and then an additional 30 minutes or so of erotic play time...probably would have shelled out $180 minimum if satisfied and enjoyable. You went with $160 which is fair in my book, but I would have chosen to show a little more generosity. Just my 2c.

I am sure you are fine. When I intend to see the masseur again, i tend to be more generous...greasing the skids so to speak, for the next meeting. But also keeping in mind that your generosity from one session to the next will be compares by the masseur, so don’t go overboard. If you are ‘overly generous’ you may set expectations that can lead to disappointment and frictions in the future. I keep a tight rein on my generosity and keep it very consistent from session to session. ?

It sounds like you are considering slipping him more for the previous visit? I would not do that - too much chance of sending mixed messages. When next you see him, tell him how much you enjoyed the previous session, totally MADE your week. A little flattery to send the message: I want that again! If he gets the message and you get another good session, then up your generosity to the level he can expect in the future.

Also consider where you are located (just to level set). In this example, $160 may go a looonng way in Jacksonville FL, but not so in Los Angeles CA. You did not mention your location. Finding the right balance takes a bit of time. You will figure out what works for you after a while. In your example, in NYC if I received a great 90 minute massage plus 30 minutes play time with 2 HEs as you described and I intended to visit again, I would shell out $200. Again, that is just me - other may disagree. You do you.

I would say this. If you are going to tip an escort or masseur AND you are certain you are going to see them again, tie the tip to something. In other words, if you always pay $200 and then one day you give him $300 but you say nothing about it, he will be expecting it next time. Ok, that sounds like his problem not yours, but what happens is that it creates confusion. The escort starts to second guess himself, what did I do wrong this time, he "only" gave me $200, but last time he gave me $300.

Do it it like this as you're pulling out the money, if you are inclined to add a $50 or a $20 or what have you,

1. Make it clear that you are adding additional bill or bunch of bills AFTER you pulled out the fee.

2. While handing him the TIP just say, "you said you need a new phone, so put this in the phone piggy bank" or narrow it down even more, "here, get out of the apartment and get something out to eat tonight/today"

ok. i feel you on that point of not setting up expectations. i have been seeing this guy maybe once every two months or so for the last two years. it has been developing very slowly over the course of that time. it's not a rub and tug place. so part of me felt a little bad about it. the previous time i saw him i was very very hard and nothing happened but i gave him about 35% tip (kind of just cause the massage is good, but also as sort of a "sorry i keep coming here and getting so obviously turned on" ) so i think we both knew this was gonna happen this time

which is just to say i've been "greasing the skids"

maybe next time i will just give him the increased, appropriate tip and level off there. he is very good at what he does

and oh yeah, i'm in NYC Sooo

I only tip when something really outstanding happens, either by skill or extra-time provided.

If it was just nice, I would tip $20. If it was a great performance + extra time, I would tip $50.

Just once one regular took me to the skies and I tipped $100, but those were better times financially.

I always make sure to tip at least 20. They dont techniqually keep all the funds, it goes towards upkeep, supplies, rent etc. As they cover all those costs alone. Most would want private apartments or rooms for the massage and that gets expensive without roommates. Most are young to afford it alone.

I am understanding of that and make sure to tip and they almost always appreciate and remember that.
