I love crazy New York right now.

Reminds me of the late 80’s early 90’s NYC.
A little messy, a little dangerous, certainly not sterile. 

I predict some impressive creativity will come from this time.

New York is back! In contrast to my visit one year ago, the crowds are enormous! Sidewalks packed, restaurants packed, TKTS lines as long as you have ever seen them.

Sadly, fall color in Central Park was not so great, unlike last year!

"Fall color" ? You're lucky to see leaves this far into November ! It's been unusually warm this year.

Central Park was beautiful mid-October.

Typically the weather turns after Halloween. Some years people are practically naked and other years they need a coat. That's how I keep the turn of the season in mind.

On Central Park and fall colors, I do know what I am talking about. The best time is almost always the week of the Marathon. Central Park gets color later because of the unique heat issues in Manhattan. I'll take your word for it that they peaked in October, but I have both lived in New York and visited it this same week to know of what I speak. Next time I see you I will show you the pics of last year's fall colors. In central park!

Someone here may be interested in knowing that Main Noodle House is a relatively inexpensive Chinese restaurant at 1011 6th Avenue, between 37th and 38th. Not only is the food great, it is a popular place.

It’s not back - I live there. But, thanks for your tourist POV.  ugh

NYC is slowly coming back - maybe 25% of people are working in offices 3 days a week. The businesses that depend on the 2 million daily commuters into Manhattan are devastated.  It will be a very long road back.

Ah yes - the tourists in Manhattan….just what every New Yorker loves. The slow walking on sidewalks, talking in Broadway performances & instagramming in our museums.  They are dreadful, but a necessary evil - thank god most of them don’t appreciate the real theater or plays. 

But, I’m happy to know that you actually still go somewhere every once in awhile. I thought you  were in the category of most on the other site reliving past glory of 20+ years ago in Brazil & Thailand. That’s rather sad ;(

you have it exactly right - this is a return to the 80s & 90s.  Lots of new creativity in new restaurants & retail done in a different way.  The artists returning I’m not so sure given the crazy rents

New Yorkers loathe the tourists - a necessary evil for the worst parts of the city.
in an ideal situation, we take their money and they leave quickly….. just like an escort working over a foolish client.  
I’m endlessly entertained by the tourists pov on the city tho ….always some good laughs

I’ve lived here since 1996 and had never been to Greenpoint. Last week I played tourist and ventured for polish food in Greenpoint. Was fun navigating the G train and I felt like a silly tourist and messed up following google directions..lol. Sometimes, it’s nice to look through the daily mundane things with a different lens.

some really great restaurants over there - Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co is one of them. A very cool neighborhood for sure

Oh, I have to try that!!! Was at the polish restaurant Karczma… pretty good. Not sure if it’s worth the trip there alone as we have Veselka in the East Village that will satiate my perogi and kielbasa fix.

We are all tourists at some time or another. You can't generalize about them. I agree with @slvkguy that some tourists can be obnoxious. When I lived in New York, I always tried to avoid Times Square.

In the desert, we bemoan the arrival of the snowbirds. Yet their spending helps the community thrive.

There's a variation every year, so although you may have enjoyed the peak color around the marathon in some years, in other years, the weather turns cold BEFORE the marathon, and if that lasts, you not only lose the color but the leaves drop too. So this year, we had a cold snap mid-October and then it warmed up again. But that brought an early fall. So like I said by Mid November, you were lucky there were still leaves on the trees.

I agree. And living in a city that is popular with tourists reinforces the notion that it is a desireable place to be.

Completely agree with you...especially about NYC.  It just reinforces the stereotype that all New Yorkers are assholes.  I have to say though I've NEVER met a nice person in NYC lol

I find just the opposite. 

Native NY'ers are mostly no-bullshit people and, in my travels, easy to get along with.  If you're straight forward and can get the point across in five words instead of five hundred, you'll do fine.

If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.  That's the truth.

I definitely agree with that.  I visit quite often so I like to think I'm not the novice tourist or the one they're actually pissed at.  When I'm there I tend to pick up some of their "rude" behavior myself.  Honestly it's the transplants that are the worst.
