I've never been to Miami. Any recommendations on where to stay and have easy access to rentboys, beach, upscale retail and restaurants?

I'm a typical guest at Westin, Warwick and Marriott... not much for top tier or budget properties.

I'm open to priceline, kayak and direct booking.

I prefer to stay in the South Beach area, specifically the art deco strip. There are a number of Marriott and other large hotel chain properties. It is close to the beach and restaurants, but can be pricey.

The South Beach hotel scene is insanely overpriced and nearly all of them need a good cleaning/renovation/rehab. I'm always marvel at how disappointing Miami's 'top tier' properties are with ridiculously low levels of service.

Look at Downtown, Miami Beach (much cheaper) and Brickell (super new oceanfront condos, great prices).

If you must be in South Beach, look at Airbnb or HomeAway. Much better options, more space and a wider price point.

I stayed at the Royal Palm in January 2016. Nice hotel, not the most high end, but clean and in good repair, with a nice walk in shower, right on the beach on Collins near 15th with a friendly staff. It's independent, but used Starwood points, so was very affordable, but don't know what rates would be, but may it now be part of the Marriott portfolio for points.

It's next door to the Loews, and a block or two south of the Ritz Carlton.

If you cab from the airport, they (then) had zone fares. It was $40 one way from MIA to the hotel.

My one and only time I hired someone to come to my hotel, but we had met before, so all good.

Do not, I repeat, do not stay in South Beach. It’s riff raff and tourists hell. I agree with @Benjamin_Nicholas and advise you stay in Brickell, which is way more sexier with many standout properties. Marriott Marquis was a fave of mine for many years but I’m sure there is much better now. The only thing that separates you and the beach is a quick ride across the causeway.

If you are still inclined to stay on the beach, look at properties in Bal Harbour. Surfside, Mid Beach and North Beach, all a bit more quiet, and all super accessible to escorts.

Check out Wynwood and Bal Harbour for upscale retail and restaurants.

1993 or so, I picked up a friend at the airport, returning from South Beach. He took a look around the Detroit airport & said "Back to the land of ugly people".

Would it have been impertinent to observe, 'And no sooner have you landed than you become one of them'?

Of course there's more to it than that, as from the way you wrote it he was a local returning home rather than a critical outsider, and it was as much a description of the 'beautiful' people he'd left behind as it was any sort of critique of Detroit.
