I just saw a review recently of this new indie film "101 Hustlers", which is a documentary on the male street trade on Santa Monica Blvd. in L.A. The filmakers supposedly took a straightforward approach to the topic, paying the guys for their time to be infront of the camera and talk about their lives.

1) Has anyone here seen it? What did you think of it?

2) I was curious: I've been to L.A., and will be going again soon. I've walked a good section of the Blvd. from Hollywood to WeHo. I didn't know the street trade in L.A. was still active; I didn't notice any loitering men that would set off red flags in my mind. Where is the "stroll" along Santa Monica Blvd., down towards Venice? Anyone know?

Any info. would be most educational.

RE: The stroll

The active blocks....but not as active as they used to be....are the few blocks just west of La Brea......also there is a pickup bar called Hunters along there.....BE VERY CAREFUL.

RE: Hunters

City closed Hunters several weeks ago. For good from what I hear so the streets should be REALLY active.

RE: 101 Escorts

Glad to see you, Hoo, posting here again. It seems like a long while. But perhaps you're "biting off more than you can chew" has been further complicated by a move between cities? At any rate, "A man's reach should exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for?" Only by going for what might seem impossible do we accomplish all that we possibly can.

101 Hustlers

I saw the film at the San Francisco Gay & lesbian Film Festival last June. It was entertaining, somewhat moving, but very limited in the type of man presented. Remember: these are all street hustlers. Most are like street trade anywhere else and have problems with drugs, extremely bad family situations -- all of the usual. But the seamier side of life has its appeal also. I would imagine that the film will get a general release in larger cities soon. The filmmakers are busy with their other recent release: "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." Also worth seeing.

RE: LA Street Hustlers

As far as I can tell, there is nothing going on any more west of LaBrea. That portion of Santa Monica, and west all the way to Beverly Hills, has been dug up for some under-the-street pipe work and is a total mess. Also, Hunters is now open again, I believe, with a promise to "behave" (i.e., no hustlers).

Although the police continue to crack down, there is still active trade on Santa Monica east of La Brea, as several others have posted here. It's just sparser than it used to be and the boys try to be cooler about it because the cops are always around.

In the last five years, I've only had a few bad experiences--and many very good ones. The most active area still seems to be from Cauhuenga west to LaBrea, although activity east of there has picked up some to avoid the cops.

I go there most often in the afternoons and I am very selective. If there's no one you like around, just wait a bit and someone will show. Although the evenings are more active, it's harder to check out your would-be "date" in the dark. Best advice: don't get so excited you ignore your instincts; listen to them and you'll usually do just fine.

Happy hunting!

RE: LA Street Hustlers

Hello, All!

Thanks for the replies. Yep, I got the title wrong; thanks for the correction, so that others can watch out for it.

I just got back from my too-brief weekend in L.A.; went to the Bad Boys Pool Party. (There's more about that on the appropriate thread.) I did pass through the "stroll" west of La Brea on Santa Monica several times during the weekend. (Matter of fact, I recognized the 24 hr. diner on Santa Monica from Bruce La Bruce's flick, "Hustler Blue", so I knew I must be in the right place!) All looked mighty quiet. With the street so torn up, it's hard to imagine that a lively street trade could exist. I would think that the car-to-curb trade is all but gone. With one lane of traffic going either way, there's no space for 'shoppers' to stop. I can't confirm wether or not Hunter's is still open; I didn't have the time to check it out.

Maybe on a future trip I'll have the time to find out more.

CORRECTION: "Hustler WHITE" is the correct name of the Bruce LaBruce film. I'm batting .000 on my gay film titles, eh? Guess I'll have to watch more gay features & less gay porn....or how about more of both? }> lol

Just to reiterate what my namesake above mentioned, "101 Rent Boys" will be on Cinemax tomorrow, Monday August 28th. It was produced by the makers of "The Eyes of Tammy Faye". Porn Performer/Escorts interviewed include Will Clark, Tommy Cruise, Ted Matthews, Lex Kyler, Max Grand and Steve Pierce.

Anyone with Cinemax care to review the film for us? would love to hear your responses!

Peace & Pleasure!

Santa Monica Blvd. Hustlers

With all the construction on Santa Monica Blvd., the street trade been centered one block west of Orange (the Shakey's) until as far east as Bonnie Brae (the end of the very long strip mall).

The activity has been constant depending upon the hour. It usually picks up after 4 p.m. for the evening commute. Nights, especially during weekends, can prevent cruising due to club kids and what not.

Police activity is prevalent especially in the area between Orange and Las Palmas. Vice cops on bikes as well. Squad cars tend to park either on Romaine (one block south of Santa Monica) or Lexington (just a block north of Santa Monica) on various side streets.

RE: 101 Escorts

I in fact did watch this the other night, and was interested to see several things.

I was amazed by the fact that these men would share their lives for supposedly 50 bucks, on film. Now I know a vast majority also do drugs and will do just about anything for cash, but some appeared to be higher end escorts (such as Will Clark and Max Grand) and would not have to do something like this for 50?

I also found it intersting how some of these men appeared. I know that it takes all types, but some of these men were down right scary looking, such as missing teeth and appeared not to have showered for days.

IMHO, the movie for the most part made these folks appear to be very down and out, and this was a sad means to an end for them. It did show some that appeared to be truly happy with their choice, but it seemed to me that the vast majority were just desperate for the $$.
