I was chatting with a guy on Grindr (his name was "m@ss@ge...").

He didn't seem to be a bot, since his responses to questions were all sensible and on-point. As the chat continued, I kept waiting for him to insist on texting me, or ask me to sign up with one of those scam verification web sites. Didn't happen.

The thing is, in his profile it listed his height as 5'12". For those of you outside the U.S., that doesn't make any sense. The correct height would be 6'.

This is the second time recently that I've seen a measurement like this show up in Grindr profile, so I checked on my iPhone, and you can't select that; it (correctly) goes from 5'11" to 6'. (Could someone check the Android version and see if it would be possible to specify 5'12"?)

So, my best theory is that whatever software these scammers are using to hack into grindr and create fake accounts is allowing them to select answers that aren't valid, and can't be selected in the real app. Any other theories?

I checked my Android phone. No, 5'12" is not an option. I tried to type it in but that is not an option either. He was obviously smart enough not to use the word "massage" in his name to avoid getting banned. You're probably right - the scammers programmed their bot incorrectly.

After interacting with him a bit more, and waiting for him to ask me to visit a link to a shady site or pay him in advance, he never did. I later spotted his ad on rentmasseur, so I think he might have actually been real.

I'm currently thinking that, since he's from a foreign country, he entered his height in centimeters, and it was a grindr bug that incorrectly converted it to 5'12".

I'm thinking that I probably pushed away a real guy by assuming he was yet another grindr scam.

Yeah...I feel you got a little too cynical?

Better a cynic than a chump.

Don’t get down on yourself, OP. I’ve had many a client tell me to follow my gut. It’s the right route to go, protecting yourself. You feel you’ve pushed him away? If you think this guy is actually bona fide, and you’re still desirous, by all means extend an olive branch — but don’t feel melancholy if he balks.

This past summer, an escort ad online caught my eye. No reviews to go on (and I'm generally careful about that) but I was drawn to give this a try. I was interested in some roleplay, he was very into the scenario and we had a few great discussions about what we would do. We set a tentative date to meet, but then due to some heath/emotional issues that I was facing, I felt I had to cancel. But also in the back of my mind, I was feeling a bit leary because he was such a shot in the dark. So I wrote him a gracious note saying that I needed to reconsider, at least for the time being.

His response was interesting. In the short term, he was very unhappy that I was cancelling. But he did also say that when I felt ready, he'd still be glad to meet, and would be looking forward to that.

We haven't been in touch since, though I would still like to consider meeting, once I feel I'm ready, and if I find myself trusting the situation. But ultimately I'm glad that I didn't meet him when we had planned, as it would not have been the right time for me to do it.

Is that a stun gun in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?

CHICAGO (CBS) — They thought they were meeting their dates near some of Chicago’s nicest hotels.

Instead. they were threatened with a stun gun and robbed. CBS 2’s Vince Gerasole has more with what all the victims have in common.

Four attacks in all since December, one of them took place at the Cambria Hotel. They are all centered in the downtown and Gold Coast areas.

Police said the victims and their attackers met on the on the dating app Grindr. They point out the risks of meeting up privately with people you don’t really know.

Authorities said the man met and lured his victim to a hotel room in the Loop’s Cambria Hotel through a dating app. There he used a stun gun on his victim stealing his wallet.

Though taken into custody police said the victim was reluctant to press charges, and the suspect later released.

That was on January 6, and it’s now one of four similar dating app stun gun robberies reported in the loop and the Gold Coast since late December.
