This is a whole new take on TV comedy. It is funny but with a dark side. If renewed I hope it expands from the 15 minute format. The actor portraying the lead, Ryan has no formal training and the series is a comedic take on his true life story. I hope it wins Emmy awards.

I know I am late with this (as with most of my life). I just started to watch Special and I found it funny and endearing. At the same time I could relate to much of the main character's experiences and feelings and if it really is the writer's and main actor's life experience I am amazed that it found it's way on to a screen. It sort of reminded me of the ability of the Australian show Please Like Me's ability to find a network because of the subject matter and unremarkable (i.e. not gorgeous, not sensationally muscular) gay main character and writer. It was nice to see characters that could have been stock characters but that over time become presented in much more fulsome ways, i.e., his Indian friend who on the surface is presented as someone that has no breaking point but that later explains how there is much more to her. I also hope that the 15 minute format is expanded somewhat but I guess I should be happy that they renewed it for another season.

I also found the scene with the hired escort to be both tender and totally understandable. It was hard to watch how uncomfortable the main character was because he was a disable person who really did not know what to expect but to have had a life where he had been judged and discriminated against. It was wonderful, however, to watch the escort both guide the main character through the introduction to gay sex and be non-judgmental about it. It was also very remarkable to see the show film the bodies go through the motions of gay sex. And, as noted, the escort was great looking.

I started watching the second season and I have not liked it as much as the first.  I will admit that I have only watched two episodes.  I thought that it was telling that I did not like it such that it became binge material (if you know what I mean).  Actually I do not know if they have posted all the episodes - perhaps they do so automatically.  If it does not pick up I know I won't get through the whole thing.
