I know this topic is couple years old but thought i'd reply anyway:

I went to Thornton HS in Harvey, IL 1973–74 (before family moved out of area). For freshman, that meant a mandatory 9 weeks of swimming as part of PE class.

For the guys, that also meant something else. It meant 9 weeks of NUDE swimming class, 5 days a week.

There were various reasons given as to why that was depending on who you spoke to and in spite of the outcries by some - the nude classes went on and were mandatory - refuse and you failed PE - period.

I can recall even now the Friday before the start of swimming class the following Monday one of my classmates inquiring about swimming suits (as to whether we had to purchase one or the school would be providing them) and our PE teacher replying “neither, you won't be wearing swim suits, boys do swimming class nude here. No one cares what you look like and if you are shy, get over it".

The first week or so there were a lot of hands covering things with guys trying their best to stay covered even while jumping into the pool.

After about a week no one was doing that anymore. Everyone got used to what was happening. And quoting the PE teacher “no one cared".

There was a couple instances where you question the “thinking" when our regular PE teacher wasn't there and the sub was a female - but even that didn't seem to bother anyone: nude we got and swimming class went on as usual.

My understanding is that practice at Thornton stopped in the late-90′s, early 2000′s sometime. Even with the explanations given still never really understood it, but, I did it, just like every other male freshman at the school did for many years before and after me did.

I believe all of this was more of a Midwestern practice.  Growing up in the south, I saw none of this.  But, as a member of The Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis, there was a major controversy about 15 years ago when they told the old guys that they could no longer swim laps in the nude.  These were the 70+ yr old members who had done it it high school and we’re still doing it.  Frankly, it was a “gouge your eyes out” kind of experience, so the younger members objected and the practice ceased.

Did my first nude photoshoot as senior in high school with 3-4 other guys in shower area. A male teacher took the pics. A black guy and me had the best quads and ass in the picture.

Was this a private school? How did this fly? Or were you all fucking and this was a secret shoot?

It was public school. The teacher picked out 5-6 guys from different sports to do a photoshoot in the subway title shower. None of our heads were shown - just our back, ass and legs.

Of course, one or two guys dropped out of shoot. No fucking happened.

I grew up in the south as well and missed out on nude swimming at school. Although, I went skinny dipping a few times.  Mixed swimming at midnight was scandalous in the late 70s!

My first marriage evolved out of a group midnight skinny dipping session in Alabama in college 🍑🍆

but again, I think high school nudity for boys in the Midwest was fairly common.  They blamed it on lint in the filtration system for the poools.

It must have been a very exciting experience. Of course, today the teacher would be excoriated if not hanged, drawn and quartered

I remember showering after gym classes all through high school and also in the seventh grade

No question that I would have remembered 8th grade gym because the same male students were in all my classes. Perhaps the school dropped gym that year.

After gym showering was a bit embarrassing for me even though I had lost a lot of weight and had a growth spurt right before high school.  When from 5'4 to 5'9 and from 199 to 149 with a nice physique.  Though embarrassing, I always took a quick shower.  When I went to college, I lived in an all male dorm and there was a community shower on each floor.  I was in ver good shape but I still arranged to take my shower in the afternoon when the community shower was likely to be empty or sometimes late at night.  If someone else was there, I showered anyway but always felt a bit unsettled.

I went to my first nude beach at age 26 or so and now I do not think much about it though I clearly am no longer in great shape.  Of course, though I am not really uncomfortable being nude in a group, I still must bow to Robster who is usually the first one naked in the pool at the Palm Springs get together.

When I was a junior in high school, the boys swam in the nude.  Because I could not handle this at all, I transferred to a school where swimming was not part of the physical education curriculum for juniors.  In looking back, I can't remember if this particular high school even had a swimming pool.

In light with the preceding, I hated p.e., for I was not very athletically inclined.  To avoid embarrassment at shower time, I became towel boy as a freshman at one school and managed to do the same as a sophomore.  Those visions were sizzling; to date I can still see some of my heavily hung classmates exiting the shower and wandering their way to the small room where I stood handing out towels.

Damn, why and what we had to undergo as adolescents still baffle me today.

Thinking about it more I wonder if the insistence on showering in school being more prevalent back in the day was a piblic health decision.  There were relatively more poor people back then and it was probably a way to make sure kids were getting clean without subjecting them to individual scrutiny.  Kind of like free school lunches kept some people from the stigma of applying for welfare - and/or helped the kids whose parents would rather starve than accept charity.

I heard that our gym teacher insisted one kid take a shower, with soap.  It was a family with a ton of kids and they were usually pretty grubby.

I know a guy who worked in juvenile corrections for a while - I think a halfway house type thing.  He said it was not uncommon that they had to teach kids how to bathe.  They would demonstrate soaping up their arm and tell them they needed to do that all over, including their private areas.  (This was past the era where they would actually watch them shower).
