I'll take the 2nd from the left. They guy to right of him is probably a popular choice, but he looks like all swagger to me.

I was born and raised in Southern California. Very few Junior High Schools had swimming pools but nearly all Senior High Schools did. Because of our weather school swimming pools were all outdoors thus no nude swimming. We did, however, have gang showers which we were all required to us. Frankly I never gave it a second thought. School showers started becoming a thing of the past in the mid to late 80's. Kids who had P.E. first period on a warm spring or fall day would simply go to the rest of their classes smelling all day. When I was in school the girls all had semi private showers but most guys didn't think anything of being naked around each other in the showers. Now days that has all changed. I never ceased to be amazed how many men (mostly young) won't even use urinals in public restrooms; the go into the stalls.

Would any of our younger readers care to chime in as to whether they had showers after gym when they went to school? I find that surprising. Usually, the "look at the floor" method worked for me. Once, some jocks forced my head up when the teacher wasn't looking, and then began snapping wet towels at me when I got the predictable hard-on. That episode really made me fear the showers, but I think it only happened once or twice.

In the 80s I started playing organized sports at about 9, but it wasn't affiliated with my school at that point. We showered after practice and games and as I recall we just took it for granted. But I was still pretty young when I began to recognize that I liked looking at the others too much, and began to carefully avoid doing that. I still showered with everyone but was pretty efficient about it, and I didn't take part in much of the horseplay that went on.

In middle school we had gym class but no one showered after that. Still, we changed in front of each other. Then I went to an all-boys high school. I don't know about the other classes, but if you were on a team you had PE last period so you could start practice right after school-- which meant there were guys from all four years in one class. Once practices for the various teams ended, I think everyone showered, it was just part of the jock culture. If there wasn't practice, most of us showered anyway. This was during my feverish denial of any attraction to other boys, and even if it was risky I showered too, just to prove I was like everyone else. I never got a boner but seeing some of the guys naked made me feel very uncomfortable-- I know now because I liked what I saw. In some cases I avoided becoming friends with some who I was too affected by, and I regret that a bit. (Not because I wish anything had happened, but because we could have been friends.)

My sons went to the same school, and I have no idea if anyone showers after gym class. But they too were always on teams, and I know from waiting for them after practices and games that some players, maybe two thirds, came out of the locker room immediately, having just put on a warm-up suit or something, and a smaller number came out later after obviously showering and changing-- you could tell from the wet hair! I don't know if they've remodeled the shower, but it used to just be a square room with shower heads all around. So looking at the floor or wall was something I did too.

Not just in the locker rooms or showers, but in work situations, when I was young and denied any attraction to men, I was afraid to get to know some guys for fear of being perceived gay. How I wish I could go back and get to know some of them. Cannot change the past, but learned from it.

  • 2 years later...

I know this topic is couple years old but thought i'd reply anyway:

I went to Thornton HS in Harvey, IL 1973–74 (before family moved out of area). For freshman, that meant a mandatory 9 weeks of swimming as part of PE class.

For the guys, that also meant something else. It meant 9 weeks of NUDE swimming class, 5 days a week.

There were various reasons given as to why that was depending on who you spoke to and in spite of the outcries by some - the nude classes went on and were mandatory - refuse and you failed PE - period.

I can recall even now the Friday before the start of swimming class the following Monday one of my classmates inquiring about swimming suits (as to whether we had to purchase one or the school would be providing them) and our PE teacher replying “neither, you won't be wearing swim suits, boys do swimming class nude here. No one cares what you look like and if you are shy, get over it".

The first week or so there were a lot of hands covering things with guys trying their best to stay covered even while jumping into the pool.

After about a week no one was doing that anymore. Everyone got used to what was happening. And quoting the PE teacher “no one cared".

There was a couple instances where you question the “thinking" when our regular PE teacher wasn't there and the sub was a female - but even that didn't seem to bother anyone: nude we got and swimming class went on as usual.

My understanding is that practice at Thornton stopped in the late-90′s, early 2000′s sometime. Even with the explanations given still never really understood it, but, I did it, just like every other male freshman at the school did for many years before and after me did.

In a situation where someone may turn away as I change clothes or drop drawers to put on a swimsuit I tell my friends “nothing new here…”.

Exactly.

In Dallas, a group of friends and I would go to the Korean spas on a regular basis.

Full nudity through the wet areas and we all just felt comfortable around each other.

Nothing sexual.  Just friends hanging out.

It certainly has not changed on the East Coast in some places. But, in general, you are correct

I was surprised by that myself awhile back while I was at a urinal in the restroom of a supermarket.  A young guy came in and walked right past the urinals to a stall.  In hindsight, it was probably a good thing.  I swear, it sounded as if a carwash was happening in that stall.

I hated communal nudity at school for showering in jr high and high school. But, I figured out NOT showering was a larger problem for me than trying to hide myself, so I did adjust, got myself clean, and haven’t had a problem since. There’s always better bodies on display, but there’s always worse too. I do remember that there were a couple of guys who had repeated a grade or two, pushing evidence of puberty ahead of the rest of us. In addition to acne and muscles, one had a pendulum, and the other a beautiful hairy chest and ass…

Nudity in the US has, over time, been forced into a singular association with improper sex, creating a phobia about our own bodies when we’re young - the “right to have privacy” for simply being nude has distorted further our prudery to where all nudity equals sex, so now, that casualness described in earlier posts (no one cares) when everyone is nude, no longer serves as a key to understanding that nudity is not weird and scary if you practice the golden rule: stare not, lest ye be stared at.
We’re all born naked, everything after that is drag.
The whole “zero tolerance” mentality of parents has done no good for kids, especially regarding nudity.

I had taken my mom to see an opera and there turned out to be both male and female full Monty. It took a lot of discussion after to get her to understand that in this story it was not “disrobing for sex”, it was to illustrate extreme (emotional) vulnerability of the character in the situation.

When at a gym or spa or any public changing area now, I am never a show off, nor a creepy ogler. It doesn’t mean I emerge without some memories…

And tbh I would prefer to swim only in the buff. It just feels better.

Catholic high school. Mid-to-late 70s. No pool, no swimming, but we did change out of our school uniforms into jockstraps and gym uniforms for PE, and we were required to shower after class -- no exceptions, no excuses -- in a large gang shower (yellow-tiled, I believe).

I don't recall any anxiety about this. What I do remember is a few of the more muscular bodies, and which guys had larger dicks (Kevin M!--who would have thought it?), and the name of the boy who (although he had terrible acne) had a truly outstanding butt. Ah, Gary, I hope your face eventually cleared up, because in every other way, you were fine
